SI Job Descriptions

SI Leader


  • Completed the course for which you are applying as well as one additional course in the course discipline and have a declared major or minor in the course discipline. Preference is given to students who completed the courses.
  • Received at least an A- in the course.
  • Minimum gpa. of 3.3.
  • Attended at least two semesters of college; preference given to juniors and seniors.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Time Commitment: 8-10 hours per week

  • Attend all class sessions.
  • Spend at least one hour planning for each SI session held.
  • Conduct two, 50 minute SI sessions during the week (Monday-Thursday) during the times of 4:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Attend weekly training sessions during the first two semesters you are employed and then approximately five training sessions during your third and subsequent semesters.

Responsibilities in class

  • Take thorough notes of all lectures.
  • Advertise SI to your class regularly and motivate students to attend SI.
  • Regularly communicate with your course professor about class and SI sessions, including a weekly meeting of at least 15 minutes.
  • Administer mid-term and end of semester evaluations with students.

Responsibilities for planning

  • Utilize the Session Planning Forms to prepare organized, effective SI sessions.
  • Incorporate collaborative and active learning techniques as demonstrated in weekly training.
  • Create teaching and study materials to aid students in learning course material.
  • Use the SI manual and web site resources to increase the effectiveness of your SI sessions.

Responsibilities during SI sessions

  • Take roll during each SI session.
  • Create a comfortable learning environment during SI sessions.
  • Ensure students actively participate in the learning process.
  • Teach study skills such as textbook reading, note taking, and test preparation and test taking skills.
  • Use a variety of teaching methods.
  • Implement ideas learned during SI training.

Responsibilities as a member of the SI program:

  • Attend all training meetings and actively participate.
  • Meet with and communicate regularly with your SI coordinator, including participating in observation and evaluation feedback meetings.
  • Submit attendance rolls weekly to your SI coordinator.
  • Submit electronic rolls monthly and time cards twice monthly to the ASP staff assistant.
  • Compile data as necessary for mid-term and end-of-semester evaluations.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of the SI Program.
  • Evaluate your coordinator and the SI Program.

SI Coordinator

Minimum Qualifications

  • Worked as an SI leader for at least one semester with positive performance evaluations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of the SI model and quality assurance needs

General Responsibilities:

The SI Coordinator is hired to support the SI program by supervising approximately seven SI leaders, under the guidance of the ASP director and program assistant, and to assist with training by presenting selected topics. Coordinators conduct 3-4 informal and formal observations of their SI leaders' sessions each semester, followed by individual meetings where they review observations, provide feedback, and establish goals for improvement.

Coordinators meet with the ASP director and program assistant weekly to review leaders' progress, plan for training, and discuss other program items.

Coordinators must attend all SI training sessions, during which they meet with their SI leaders to discuss how to effectively implement training information into SI session. Coordinators support the development of the SI program by sharing ideas, materials, and providing feedback. SI coordinators will be evaluated by their assigned SI leaders at least twice a semester and by the program director and assistant once.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Conduct observations of SI leaders at least four times each semester.
  • Conduct feedback sessions with SI leaders following observations.
  • Develop improvement plans and goals with SI leaders, as necessary.
  • Assist SI leaders in planning and organizing SI sessions, as necessary.
  • Encourage and assist SI leaders in implementing active learning techniques and SI training ideas into their sessions.
  • Assist with planning and delivering SI training sessions and training materials.
  • Ensure that the SI leaders complete necessary paperwork.
  • Model professional attitudes and behaviors to staff, students, faculty, and others on and off campus.
  • Promote the SI program to faculty and students.
  • Evaluate SI program to identify strengths, weaknesses, and recommended solutions.

SI Program Assistant

The SI Program Assistant (PA) supports the administration and coordination of the Supplemental Instruction program. This position reports directly to the ASP director, who directs the SI program. The PA will also support other ASP programs and general office duties, as necessary.

Preferred requirements:

Experience working in SI program as SI leader and/or SI coordinator for a minimum of two semesters

Minimum requirements:

  • Completed at least two semesters at Utah State
  • USU cumulative gpa of 3.2 and semesters gpa's of no less than 3.0
  • Computer proficiencies:
  • Microsoft Office programs, with above average proficiency with Word and PowerPoint
  • Create and maintain spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel
  • File management (organize files/folders and data backup)
  • Email programs and distribution lists (Outlook and Aggie Mail)
  • Develop or propose computer-based solutions for program administration
  • Demonstrated excellent written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commit to 20 hours/week, Monday-Friday, between 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m.
  • Be available for each scheduled SI training session.
  • Begin working one week before each semester begins.
  • Commit to one year in the position (late summer semester through following spring semester)


These responsibilities will be carried out either independently or under the guidance and direction of the ASP director.

  • Conduct screening of all SI leader applicants.
  • Assist with training and supervision of SI Coordinators.
  • Collect Coordinator schedules and assign Coordinator groups.
  • Attend SI classes throughout the semester to guide effective marketing of the SI program by SI leaders and faculty.
  • Schedule and coordinate with Registrar Scheduler all classroom assignments for SI training, SI sessions, and special SI test reviews.
  • Administer the evaluation and assessment components of the SI program, including reminder notices; SI leader training; distribution, collection, organizing of evaluation data.
  • Assist director and Coordinators with developing and implementing weekly SI leader training sessions.
  • Prepare agendas and other materials and coordinate AV equipment for weekly Coordinator meetings and SI leader training sessions.
  • Coordinate with Registrar Scheduler identification of all SI courses for Schedule of Classes.
  • Update and maintain current SI leader lists, schedules, and other forms each semester.
  • pare, distribute, and coordinate preparation of program marketing and advertising materials.
  • Maintain email distribution lists for SI leaders and SI faculty.
  • Prepare and distribute email communication with SI leaders and coordinators.
  • Update all information on ASP SI Web pages and/or coordinate with ASP Webmaster to keep information current
  • Edit SI Leader and Coordinator Manuals.
  • Provide general ASP office assistance when necessary.
  • Assist with other ASP programs as necessary.
