Preparing for Tests
Tests are performances – opportunities to demonstrate what you know. You must be appropriately prepared for tests so that you can do your best. Preparation also ensures that you are not overly anxious about your ability to perform well.
Test anxiety is mainly caused by
- professors testing on material not covered in class.
- an extreme focus on grades.
- physiological problems.
- insufficient preparation.
Many students believe that effective test preparation relates to how many hours they have studied. This is not necessarily true. The quality of your studying is as important as the quantity.
Effective test preparation includes: (select your answers by clicking your mouse on those you consider to be correct)
- studying the “right” material.
- reading assigned text chapters or supplemental readings.
- attending and participating in all classes.
- taking notes.
- completing all assignments.
You have learned how test preparation relates to test anxiety and some characteristics of effective test preparation. The remaining portions of this module will provide instruction and examples for specific test preparation strategies. Using these or other effective test preparation strategies will help you to manage your test anxiety.
The test preparation strategies presented in this module are divided into three categories. You can work through these categories in any order you choose.
