CHaSS Book Proposal Charrette
Workshop/Training
In the Fall, CHaSS Research hosted a workshop with Darrin Pratt, Director of the University of Colorado Press. Pratt shared best practices for academic press book proposals. To follow up on the advice provided during this workshop, we will be offering a charrette - a hands-on, collaborative peer review - specifically focused on in-progress book proposals. Who: Participation in the charrette is by application and is limited to 12 CHaSS faculty (at any rank or campus), including lecturers and post-docs. Preference, however, will be given to early career scholars and those soon seeking promotion. Workshop format: Faculty will be split into small groups based upon their interests and backgrounds. Each faculty member will share their book proposal (in the stage or format that it’s in) prior to the workshop with their group to receive targeted feedback. Participants will each review 1 or 2 book proposals. The workshop will also include an overview of “best practices” for book proposals and summary remarks. Five-Slide Friday
Workshop/Training
Five-Slide Friday is an informal get together over lunch on (some) Fridays where faculty and students from the Department of Data Analytics and Information Systems can present about their education, field of study, work experience, academic research, ASC project, new favorite data tool, etc. and answer questions. The objective is to help ease the friction that naturally occurs in interdisciplinary settings while helping both faculty and students learn and retool. Bring your lunch and, if you're presenting, remember that you can't prepare more than five slides!

LAEP Speaker Series: David Anderson, What Can Landscape Architecture Do for the Environment and Our Humanity
Lecture/Readings
About the Lecture How can we display genuine empathy, grace, and compassion toward ourselves and others – and the natural world around us? Humans are reliant on the environment for essential resources and services. In the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature, landscape architecture plays a unique and critical role that, through design, addresses the social needs, fundamental rights, and wellbeing of people, while stewarding care and renewal of ecological systems. Speaker Bio Dave is a Professional Practice Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP) at USU where he has teaching and Extension assignments. Dave leads instruction of the department’s Introduction to Landscape Architecture course, the largest of its kind in the U.S. with over 1,000 students taught annually. He teaches University Connections to incoming freshmen and has taught Foundations of Sustainable Systems, Land Planning for Residential Development, co-taught the Leadership in Planning and Design – a Capstone studio for LAEP seniors, and currently instructs the Analysis and Design I studio.
Science Unwrapped: Celebrate Undergrad Research - Biologist Jessica Habashi
Panel Discussion/Presentation | Science Unwrapped
Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science, invites inquiring of minds of all ages to participate in science learning fun. Admission is free. Each event begins with a brief science talk following by hands-on learning activities and refreshments. Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research." Jan 24 Speaker: Jessica Habashi is a champion of undergraduate research. Some years ago, the biologist noted a real-world program at the USU Brigham City campus and saw it not only as a challenge to be investigated, but as a meaningful research experience for students. The challenge? Bird-window collisions on the Brigham City campus. Bird-window collisions are often not though about as a major problem, Habashi says, yet the phenomenon is threatening bird populations worldwide. Habashi and are students are studying how often these mishaps occur and how to mitigate them. In the process, Habashi is teaching scholars how to design, organize, fund, conduct and present scientifically valid research projects.
