Tanner Talks Series Latina Literature, Translation, and Research: Writing in/on/as Displacement

Lecture/Readings

Our final speaker is the literary translator Julia Sanches. Sanches has translated close to 30 books into English from Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan. She has translated works by Geovani Martins, Munir Hachemi and Monsterrat Roig, and has been nominated for the International Booker Prize for three consecutive years. Her translations of Boulder by Eva Baltasar and Undiscovered by Gabriela Wiener were respectively shortlisted and longlisted in 2023 and 2024. In 2025 she was longlisted for her co-translation of Reservoir Bitches by Dahlia de la Cerda. She is a founding member of the Cedilla & Co. translators’ collective. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, she currently lives in Providence, Rhode Island.  LUNCH PROVIDED Other events: in addition to the talks, Sanches will give a literary translation workshop from 3-4:15PM. Community Rakes & Shovels Leaf Raking Sessions

This season, we are arranging raking shifts that volunteer can sign up for. We will be going out on a regular basis after the leaves start falling. After submitting your registration form, we will give you access to the shifts. Are you part of a club or group that is looking for a service project? Feel free to share the shifts with them too!

Community Rakes & Shovels was created in response to needs expressed by community members. The Christensen Office of Service & Sustainability coordinates requests for services from local senior citizens and community member with disabilities while connecting them to volunteers who would like to provide raking or snow shoveling services throughout the fall and winter.

Friends of the Library Lecture | "Conversational Chemistry" with Dr. Stephanie Borrie

Conversations shape how we connect, collaborate, and build relationships—but they are more complex than they seem. In this lecture, Dr. Stephanie Borrie, professor of speech pathology and director of the Human Interaction Lab at Utah State University, explores the science behind successful conversation. Drawing from her research with individuals affected by neurological speech disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and stroke, Borrie reveals the behavior patterns that foster meaningful communication, why disruptions occur, and how we can work together to improve conversational success.
