Tiny Pricks

Arts/Entertainment

Tiny Pricks is a public art project created and curated by Diana Weymar. Contributors from around the world are stitching Donald Trump’s words into textiles, creating the material record of his presidency and of the movement against it. Tiny Pricks Project holds a creative space in a tumultuous political climate. The collection counterbalances the impermanence of Twitter and other social media, and Trump’s statements as president through the use of textiles that embody warmth, craft, permanence, civility, and a shared history. The daintiness and integrity of each piece stand in stark contrast to his presidency. Sandra Charlson organized local community members, faculty, staff, and students to participate in this project.

Place's and Faces of Utah's Coal Country

Arts/Entertainment

Noel A. Carmack is associate professor of art at USU Eastern. He received a BFA in illustration and MFA in drawing/painting from USU. About the work in this exhibition he says: Many of the coal mines, tipples, and powerhouse stacks in Utah are beginning to disappear, due to the decline of petroleum-based energy industries. The boom-and-bust economy of southeastern Utah is turning toward more favorable efficient energy sources, so the life and traditions of the men and women who are dependent on these industries are changing. These painings and drawings represent the deteriorating structures, the weathering marks left on the landscape, and the faces of the people who live and work in the area. The work is comprised of the following: 1) industrial landscapes, featuring the machinery, structures, and tools which have been used to mine or extract the natural resources of this area, and 2) portraits of the men and women whose lives are closely tied to eastern/southeastern Utah region.

The Day After Tomorrow: Art in Response to Turmoil and Hope

Exhibition

Our new reality is profoundly different than it was six months ago. Curated amid pandemic and protests, "The Day After Tomorrow: Art in Response to Turmoil and Hope" explores how artists respond to crisis, offering parallels to our own emotions and experiences this year.

"The Day After Tomorrow" is divided into three themes. "A Better Tomorrow" focuses on transcendence, alternate realities, the divine, afterlife, and bliss. "A Worse Yesterday" comprises works of art that address events that have shaken the world and thrown it into crises such as world wars, nuclear proliferation, AIDS, genocide, racism, and immigration. "Awry Ecosystem" focuses on art by artists concerned with the environment and how humans are changing it.

Also included is a Community Response Space, which will feature rotating exhibitions of work by local artists and where you can share your personal journey through an interactive display.

Applied Mathematics Seminar: Need More Power: Energy Efficient Motion for Legged Robots

Conference/Seminar

Speaker: Dr. Mario Harper, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, USU

ZOOM ID: 945 1753 3441 PWD: USUAMS

Abstract: I hope you come out of this talk knowing a little about how to constrain mathematical models and machine learning to enable walking, adaptable robots ready to work in the real world. Humans are quite good at walking and we often forget how complex this process, for very little energy we can move almost anywhere. Replicating this type of organic walking behavior is challenging in the best of circumstances, but it is compounded when the real world gets involved (foot-ground interaction is not easy to model). Now imagine a robot tasked with moving in an unstructured outdoor environment it has never experienced. Come and see how we approach complex issues in modern robotic systems, ask questions and perhaps you will find that the mathematics of robotics is interesting to you!

The Utah Women & Leadership Project invites you to join us for Segment 3 of a 4-part webinar series titled "Why Gender Matters for Teachers & Parents: An In-Depth Exploration."

Why Gender Matters for Teachers & Parents: Segment 3 - Building Girls and Boys into Healthy Adults

Description: This webinar introduces educators and parents to research studies that can help them understand the biological and socialized distinctions between boys and girls, young men and young women, and men and women. Comprehending the inherent gender differences will help educators and parents integrate knowledge that can further maximize student learning and have the greatest impact on educational outcomes. We will discover how to build girls and boys into healthy adults by exploring tools to better understand how hormones, puberty, respect, friendship, sexual orientation, and gender fluidity effect and influence each child.

Feeling Like a Fraud: Navigating Perfectionism & Impostor Syndrome as Women

Panel Discussion/Presentation

“Feeling like a fraud” is an issue that many women grapple with. In fact, research confirms that most women experience impostor syndrome in one or more areas of their lives. Impostor syndrome is a phenomenon that causes women to doubt their accomplishments or talents and have a persistent fear of being exposed as unqualified, even when there is ample evidence that they are competent. Perfectionism is one of the primary factors underlying this common experience, and it can negatively impact a woman’s confidence as well. Bringing in research findings, Dr. Susan R. Madsen will moderate a lively and engaging panel of Utah women leaders to discuss what causes impostor syndrome and perfectionism, why these challenges are so common among women specifically, and how we can more effectively navigate these experiences. By learning how to mitigate the negative effects of perfectionism and impostor syndrome, women can increase feelings of self-worth and confidence, strengthen aspirations and ambitions to lead, and become inspired to more fully engage in the community (locally, nationally, globally) as a support to other women and girls.

Applied Mathematics Seminar: Harnessing the Power of Time Series Data

Conference/Seminar

Zoom ID: 945 1753 3441
Passcode: USUAMS

Speaker: Soukaina Filali Boubrahimi, Assistant Professor of computer science at USU.

abstract:
Time series data are ubiquitous in daily life. From our heart rates measurements, credit cards transactions, to daily bitcoins pricing, all discrete-valued data that have a time component are considered time series data. The limitation of having huge datasets is not at the storage level, as Moore's Law predicted it well, but in the ability to extract useful information from it. In this talk, I will expose some ideas on how to harness the power of time series data through some applications such as solar events predictions and spatiotemporal shape interpolation. I will also discuss our recent model, 1DCNN shapelet miner, a novel interpretable motif discovery model inspired from the idea of mining recurring patterns in DNA that are presumed to have a biological function. Finally, I will provide a discussion on some promising directions on multivariate time series classification using shapelets mining algorithms.

Also featured alongside the art are 16 poems written by women in the Cache Valley literary community.

Emotional Wellbeing for Young Women: Understanding Your Brain, Body, and Behavior

Workshop/Training

Join Dr. Christy Kane for this no-nonsense workshop on mental health for high school-aged young women. She will discuss some of the common emotional challenges that teens struggle with today. In today’s culture of constant social comparison, becoming more emotionally mature is an especially critical topic. Dr. Kane will discuss this from the perspective of how our brains work and how that impacts our lives. She will help unpack some underlying beliefs and thought processes around body image, anxiety and depression, and other emotional struggles, which will help increase mental health stability. Understanding the science behind why the brain does certain things can help create more effective thinking patterns and results in more positive choices moving forward. She will conclude by sharing strategies and tools that can help young women thrive.

HR Leaders Lecture Series (HRIS)

USU’s Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) Club invites you to its HR Leaders Lecture Series. Every month, a distinguished HR leader will present to students about their specialized field. For students interested in HR, Leadership, or Management this is a lecture series you cannot afford to miss.

This month, Tyler Orr will be talking about his career and experience with HRIS systems and People Analytics. After working for a year, he began the dual USU MHR / MBA program, where he was recruited into USAA's HR Career Development Program upon graduation. He has been with USAA since June 2019 and is about to finish a rotation with the People Insights (People Analytics) team.
