The Day After Tomorrow: Art in Response to Turmoil and Hope

Exhibition

Our new reality is profoundly different than it was six months ago. Curated amid pandemic and protests, "The Day After Tomorrow: Art in Response to Turmoil and Hope" explores how artists respond to crisis, offering parallels to our own emotions and experiences this year.

"The Day After Tomorrow" is divided into three themes. "A Better Tomorrow" focuses on transcendence, alternate realities, the divine, afterlife, and bliss. "A Worse Yesterday" comprises works of art that address events that have shaken the world and thrown it into crises such as world wars, nuclear proliferation, AIDS, genocide, racism, and immigration. "Awry Ecosystem" focuses on art by artists concerned with the environment and how humans are changing it.

Also included is a Community Response Space, which will feature rotating exhibitions of work by local artists and where you can share your personal journey through an interactive display.

Hansen Seminar: Amy Rosenzweig

Lecture/Readings

Methane emissions, which are among the most potent greenhouse gases, are a critical concern because of their ability to absorb the sun’s heat and warm the Earth’s atmosphere. Bioinorganic chemist Amy Rosenzweig says methanotrophic bacteria, commonly found in soils, wetlands and marshes, use copper from the environment to convert harmful methane into useful energy and chemicals.

Rosenzweig, Weinberg Family Distinguished Professor of Life Sciences at Illinois’ Northwestern University, discusses this process as featured speaker for USU's 2020 R. Gaurth Hansen Seminar series, Wednesday Dec. 2. She presents “Biological Methane Oxidation” at 4 p.m. Mountain via Zoom. Hosted by USU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the lecture is open to all. For Zoom access information, visit: https://chem.usu.edu/seminars/index

Rosenzweig is the 13th annual Hansen Seminar speaker. The seminar series honors the late R. Gaurth Hansen (1920-2002), a renowned USU professor, researcher and administrator.

Applied Mathematics Seminar: MCMC or: how I learned to stop worrying and love randomness

Conference/Seminar

Speaker: Luis Gordillo, Associate Professor, Department of Math & Statistics, USU
ZOOM ID: 945 1753 3441 PWD: USUAMS

Abstract: Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is a useful computer-intensive tool that has received lots of attention. By using MCMC ideas it is possible to write algorithms for sampling from complicated target distributions. In this talk, aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, I will present the main ideas of MCMC and show examples of how the techniques can be used to solve some difficult problems, including the inference of parameters in stochastic epidemic models of the SIR type.

Also featured alongside the art are 16 poems written by women in the Cache Valley literary community.

Mindfulness in Nature

Workshop/Training | Home, Family, and Food

As per the requirements of Utah State University's infectious disease plan, Summit County guidelines, and Swaner's concern for our community's health and safety, this interactive lecture will take place via Zoom meeting. Once registered, you will receive instructions for how to access the webinar in your confirmation email. We will also be recording this program and will share it with registrants afterwards.

Join us for a pay-what-you-wish, interactive introduction to mindfulness with managing director of Mindfulness Utah, Anna Smyth!

Research has shown that mindfulness and time in nature enhance mental clarity, creativity, focus, and attention to detail in addition to reducing stress and stress-related illness. During this challenging time for our community, mindfulness can play a critical role—allowing us to awaken to the healing beauty of nature, even when things are hard. In this session, we’ll explore what mindfulness is and how to be mindful in the world around you, both through a discussion and by trying out some simple mindfulness practices easily applied within a personal or professional setting.

This event is presented in partnership with USU Extension Summit County.

To Teach is to Learn Twice by Dan Holland

Workshop/Training

As Joseph Joubert affirmed, “to teach is to learn twice.” Exceptional teaching necessitates continuous learning of the “what” and the “how” of instruction. Teachers spend much of their time mastering their understanding of their chosen field by researching theories and applications. However, of equal importance, teachers must persistently learn how to guide students through the learning process.

The Learn Twice initiative was conceived and instigated in the Huntsman School of Business in 2017. The purpose of Learn Twice is to develop a learning community that will assist faculty in discovering and refining the “how” of teaching. This is accomplished by encouraging collaboration, sharing, and innovation among teachers, students, and other stakeholders.

In this seminar, we will discuss the Learn Twice initiative in the context of how we may strengthen learning communities at Utah State University.
