Haikus, Modernism and Stanton MacDonald-Wright

Exhibition

Stanton MacDonald-Wright’s “Haiga Portfolio” (1965-1966) blends Eastern and Western influences, pairing vibrant modernist paintings with haikus written by some of Japan’s most influential poets.
The term “haiga” refers to a style of Japanese painting by haiku poets, whose poems are known for their brevity and simplicity. Each of the ten prints that compose the “Haiga Portfolio” have a corresponding haiku.
The “Haiga Portfolio” exemplifies the 20th century modernist movement Synchromism, cofounded in 1913 by MacDonald-Wright and Morgan Russell. The movement sought to arrange color in the same way that sound is composed in music and is considered the first American avant-guard movement to be accepted internationally. Seventy-five years old at the time of the portfolio’s creation, MacDonald-Wright employed the use of energetic, swirling shapes coupled with dense, vivid colors orchestrated in the modernist style and the rhythm of Synchromism.

Applied Mathematics Seminar: Magic, Gandhi, and balding: matrix methods for stochastic dynamic programming

Conference/Seminar

Speaker: Jody Reimer, University of Utah
Abstract: What unites all of the things listed in this title? You'll have to show up to find out. This work is based on the concept of tradeoffs, a central idea in ecology and evolutionary biology. For example, the evolution of life history strategies is often framed in the language of tradeoffs. Behavioural ecologists may be interested in the tradeoffs inherent in the allocation of time (e.g., between foraging and vigilance) and resources (e.g., how much energy to invest in a reproductive attempt). Conservationists and wildlife managers must also consider tradeoffs between cost, political pressures, and management goals. Stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) is a powerful and flexible method for exploring optimal tradeoffs and has been used in a broad range of applications. In the last 30 years, concomitant with the development of SDP methods in ecology and evolution, matrix methods have emerged as another powerful tool for analyzing ecological systems.

Sky Above, Earth Below: A History of Western Landscape Photography

Exhibition

“Sky Above, Earth Below” traces the development of western landscape photography from the late 19th century to the 21st century, starting with early American photographers like Myra Albert Wiggins, Edward Curtis, and Karl Struss and concluding with contemporary photographers like Barry Andersen, Kimberly Anderson, Karalee Kuchar, and Charlotte Trolinger. The exhibition includes work from members of the Seattle Camera Club, FSA (Farm Security Administration), f/64 (a group of 20th-century photographers known for precise exposures and depiction of natural forms) and contemporary photography portfolios such as American Roads (printed in 1981), The Museum Project (printed in 2015), and DEMARCATION (printed in 2018).

Gallery Walk with artist Pilar Pobil

Exhibition

Pilar Pobil is a well-known artist who was born in Spain at a time "when women were not encouraged to pursue their ambitions." She followed a more traditional path -- she got married, moved to the United States and had three children. When she was in her forties, she began to take her ambition seriously. She's self-taught in many mediums and currently resides in a beautiful, well-painted home in Salt Lake City. Pilar creates art from a place of feeling, using this to depict the reality she has lived.

Join Pilar at Utah State University's Merrill-Cazier Library for a walk around an exhibit featuring her work. She will discuss what each piece meant to her at the time of its creation. This event is free and open to the public.

Why Failure is Essential for Student Learning

Workshop/Training

Students are frequently asked to achieve, on their first attempts, stellar results on high-stakes, high-pressure assessments. New research on the science of learning is beginning to show us that this strategy does not work well, though, because it is not how human beings naturally learn. We need to make mistakes before we can get the right answers. In this talk, I’ll be reviewing some of the most important findings in this new area of inquiry and suggesting ways that we can generate “opportunities for failure” in our courses so that our students may learn more effectively.

Josh Eyler is director of faculty development and director of the Thinkforward Quality Enhancement Plan at the University of Mississippi, where he is also on the faculty in the department of writing and rhetoric. He previously worked on teaching and learning initiatives at Columbus State University, George Mason University, and Rice University. His research interests include the biological basis of learning, evidence-based pedagogy, and disability studies, and he is the author of How Humans Learn: The Science and Stories behind Effective College Teaching (WVU, 2018).

Entrepreneur Leadership Series - Joel Clark & Jon Clark

Panel Discussion/Presentation

Joel Clark & Jon Clark, Founders of Kodiak Cakes
Jon started Kodiak Cakes in 1994 based on his Mother’s suggestion of creating a whole-grain food mix company. At the time, he had completed his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Utah and was working for the OC Tanner Company in Salt Lake City. In 1995, Jon’s brother, Joel, came on board and helped sell Kodiak Cakes in resort towns and gift stores. In 1997, when Jon decided to go back to the University of Utah for an MBA, he turned the tiny company over to his brother Joel who has developed it into a nationally recognized brand. Joel was a 23-year- old economics major attending the University of Utah when the company was handed to him. Over the next 12 years, Joel juggled side jobs, earned an MBA from Oxford University, and still found time to make Kodiak Cakes a success.

Author lecture: 'Kingdom of Nauvoo: The Rise and Fall of a Religious Empire on the American Frontier'

Lecture/Readings

Dr. Benjamin Park, professor at Sam Houston State University, will present a lecture sponsored by the Religious Studies Program. His just-published book, "Kingdom of Nauvoo," investigates the brief, tragic life of a lost Mormon city, demonstrating that the Latter-day Saints are essential to understanding American history. Using newly accessible sources, Park argues that far from being outsiders, the Mormons were representative of their era in their distrust of democracy and their attempt to forge a sovereign society of their own.

Applied Mathematics Seminar: Stochastic Approximate Model-Checker for Infinite-State Analysis

Conference/Seminar

Speaker: Zhen Zhang, Department of E & CE, Utah State University

Abstract: There has been an increasing demand for providing formal guarantees in the design process of safety-critical synthetic genetic circuits. As a prominent formal verification technique, probabilistic model checking has demonstrated significant potential in formally analyzing the intrinsic probabilistic behaviors of complex genetic circuit designs. However, its scalability is limited as probabilistic models of real-world applications typically have very large or infinite state space. In this talk, I will present a new infinite state CTMC model checker, STAMINA, with improved scalability. It uses a novel state space approximation method to reduce large and possibly infinite state CTMC models to finite state representations that are amenable to existing probabilistic model checkers. It is integrated with a new property-guided state expansion approach that improves the analysis accuracy. This method is evaluated on a design of a genetic toggle switch and several other benchmarking examples. Comparisons with another state-of- the-art tool demonstrate both accuracy and efficiency of the presented method.
