MAE Graduate Research Seminar
Conference/Seminar
Baseball Aerodynamics Research at USU In 2019, the USU Experimental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory began investigating the aerodynamics of baseballs in an effort to determine the reason for a spike on home runs in Major League Baseball (MLB) that year. Results from that study led to a new, more important discovery: That seams alter the path of a baseball by changing the location of boundary layer separation when the seams are in specific positions. The effect was termed Seam-Shifted Wake (SSW) which has become a common term in baseball since then. New measurement equipment added to MLB stadiums in 2020 (The camera-based HawkEye system) validated these claims. Since that time, it has become clear that SSW effects are important to most baseball pitches. Exploiting these effects allows pitchers to make the ball move in directions that are not suggested by their arm slot, which has been shown to put batters at disadvantage. In this presentation, we will review the discovery of SSW, show what has been learned since then, and discuss lessons learned along the way.

Leadership in Times of Grief & Crisis: Insights from President Astrid S. Tuminez
Panel Discussion/Presentation

Yet resilience has defined her journey from the very beginning—growing up in an impoverished farming community and the slums of a major city in the Philippines.
This webinar will explore what it means to lead through grief and crisis, while also examining the complexities of guiding a large institution of higher education in uncertain times. President Tuminez will share leadership lessons she has learned throughout her career, as well as the unique challenges and opportunities she has encountered as both a woman and a woman of color.

ELS: DR. Lyle Barbour
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Dr. Lyle Barbour is a dedicated equine veterinarian and the proud owner of Mountain Point Equine Hospital in Bluffdale, Utah. His journey began as a pre-veterinary student at Utah State University (1998–2001), followed by earning his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 2005. In 2007, he founded Mountain Point Equine Hospital, where his team strives to provide the most optimal customer/patient experience in equine veterinary medicine. Beyond his professional expertise, Dr. Barbour is known for his deep commitment to his clients, valuing the personal relationships he builds as much as the animals he treats. He brings authenticity and heart to his work every day, both in the clinic and out on the ranch. More than just a practitioner, Dr. Barbour is a passionate advocate for personal growth through adversity. His approach is deeply influenced by principles of stoicism—choosing discipline over discouragement and clarity over chaos. He finds meaning in his daily work not just through veterinary medicine, but through the strong personal bonds he builds with his clients. Outside of his career, Lyle is equally devoted to life on the land—raising cattle and growing hay on his 420-acre ranch—and to his growing family, spending time with his wife as they prepare to welcome their first child. Whether he’s in the field, the clinic, or speaking to a room full of aspiring professionals, Dr. Barbour brings an honest, grounded perspective rooted in hard work, humility, and the belief that failure is not the end—it’s the beginning of something better.

Building Resilience Through Mind-Body Bridging® Workshops
Workshop/Training
Life can be pretty tough sometimes. Why is it that some people can go through really rough times and still bounce back? The difference is that those who bounce back have resilience. Resilience is our ability to adapt successfully in the face of stress, trauma, or adversity and then bounce back to our normal state of functioning and well-being. The good news is that resilience isn't something you're born with or not. The skills of resilience can be learned.
This 4-session Building Resilience Program will provide you with skills to increase resilience during and after stressful life events, improve general well-being and enhance performance in demanding activities such as academics and sports. Research indicates that increased resilience can positively affect school and life outcomes for students, including academic achievement.
This program will introduce you to Mind-Body Bridging, an evidence-based practice that reduces distress and builds resilience. You’ll learn skills to increase awareness of your body, thoughts, and emotions, recognize unhelpful patterns, and reframe experiences to unlock your full potential.

FSQ at USU 2025-26 Series: The Crossing Point
Arts/Entertainment
The Long Arc
Program:
W.A. Mozart | StringQuartet in E-flat Major, K. 428
Leoš Janácek | String Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer Sonata”
Ludwig van Beethoven | String Quartet in C-sharp minor, Op. 131
The final concert of the season reaches back—not as escape, but as remembrance.
These works span classical elegance, psychological rupture, and transcendent modernity. Mozart offers luminous clarity. Janácek brings stormy, uncontained passion. And Beethoven’s late quartet stands like a mountain at the edge of time—defiant, searching, and radiant with radical tenderness.
Together, this program honors the lineage of the string quartet as a space of intensity and transformation. These composers, in their own eras, were each asking: What is possible within four voices?
The Fry Street Quartet asks the same.
This concert roots the season in resonance, community, and the long arc of wisdom through sound.

Tanner Talk with Dustin Edwards: Data in the Desert: Locating Digital Damage in Time, Place, and Culture
Lecture/Readings | Tanner Talks
Dr. Edwards is a digital rhetoric scholar who attends to the material, infrastructural, and, increasingly, geological dimensions of rhetoric. In particular, his scholarly monograph Enduring Digital Damage: Rhetorical Reckonings for Planetary Survival (published by University of Alabama Press) articulates and performs a story-based approach that accounts for the entangled damages (ecological, climatic, colonial) of large-scale digital infrastructures. Following digital damage to two places in New Mexico (a Meta data center in Los Lunas and a copper mine in Grant County), the project examines how digital rhetoric is intimately woven to extractive industries. The stories of “the digital” told throughout the book unfold along multiple, often unexpected, threads: water rights, climate patterns, chronic illnesses, forced relocations, species extinctions, conditions of environmental racism, and much more. Yet, by posing the question of what happens after damage, the book also amplifies stories of refusal, resistance, and brilliant invention that insist this world can be otherwise. Event is open to Statewide via Zoom. Please register here: https://usu.zoom.us/meeting/register/xbttuxRPSTWRkCGXGDG9Sg

Science Unwrapped - Microplastic Taxis for Microbes
Special Event | Science Unwrapped
Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the free, public outreach program of USU's College of Arts and Sciences. Our events begin with a brief presentation, and are followed by hands-on learning activities and refreshments. At our February 20 event: Plastics are everywhere in our modern world, providing convenience for packaging, clothing, furnishings, infrastructure and the many consumer products that make our lives easier. But plastic waste, which breaks down into small particles, is making its way into our air, soils, water, food – and into our bodies – all of which can harm our health and environment. USU environmental engineers Akib Al Mahir and Joanna (Liyuan) Hou are studying how microplastics interact with varied microbes in wastewater. Some of these microbes are beneficial and can break down microplastics. Others are harmful to humans and the environment. Akib and Joanna are exploring how microplastics behave like “tiny Uber drivers” that can transport microbes in ways that are helpful and not helpful.

ELS: Alex Swanson
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Alex Swanson credits his success to his wife, three children, and his passion for entrepreneurship. He loves entrepreneurship and encourages it to anyone seeking career advice. While studying accounting at the University of Utah, Alex found himself learning more from podcasts and books than from his classes. After graduation, he took a job at the front desk of a dental office to put that knowledge into practice. Alex has built his career on curiosity, resilience, and an endless appetite for reading and learning. Entrepreneurship has transformed his life, and he believes its future is brighter than ever. With instant access to the wisdom of the world’s greatest minds, he sees unlimited opportunity for the next generation of entrepreneurs. Using his entrepreneurial skills, Alex founded Nuvia Dental Implant Centers. The clinics specialize in giving patients permanent zirconia teeth in 24 hours, eliminating the need for temporary dentures. They offer transparent pricing, flexible payment plans, and emphasize patient eligibility, clinical experience, and the promise of restoring function and confidence through a permanent smile. Alex is also a staunch advocate for eliminating social media, attributing much of his focus and success to staying clear of its distractions. He firmly believes that the defining strength of America—and a gift to humanity—is entrepreneurship: risk-takers betting on themselves, building a better future for their families, communities, and society as a whole.

Create your own cardboard Cryptid What is a cryptid? A cryptid is a mysterious creature—like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster—whose existence is claimed but not confirmed by science. Artist Clayton Bailey used his imagination and humor to bring these mythical beings to life, blurring the line between science and fantasy. In this playful sculptural activity, you’ll use cardboard pieces, fasteners, and fun materials to design your own cryptid creature. Will it have wings? Fangs? Camouflage fur? Let your imagination go wild! You’ll also get to name your creature and write a short “field tag” describing where it lives and what it does. All materials are provided. Step into the role of both artist and explorer as you dream up a new species never before seen by the human eye!

ELS: Justin Haskell
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Justin Haskell began his career in the life insurance field, where he realized that Medicare plan solutions and final expense benefits were a growing need for people across the country. He decided to start Maximum Senior Benefits (MSB), a national company focused on offering these benefits while also providing peace of mind in the process. For over a decade, MSB has hired competitive, passionate sales professionals who seek to offer comfortable, tailored solutions to individuals and their families. Justin’s story starts well before that in the small town of Elk Ridge, Utah, where he spent his entire childhood, attending Payson High School and graduating in 1998. After high school, Justin served a Latter-day Saint mission in the Dominican Republic. He then attended Utah State University, majoring in International Studies with minors in International Business, Portuguese, and French. After graduating, Justin joined Best Buddies International, a nonprofit designed to help people with disabilities. While working for Best Buddies International, Justin moved across the country—from California to Florida—before finally settling in Utah to run Best Buddies’ Utah operation. During that time, he discovered a love for business and entrepreneurship, which led him to return to school and earn his MBA. Soon thereafter, he founded Maximum Senior Benefits. Justin currently resides in Elk Ridge, Utah, with his wife, Leslie, and their five children.

Science Unwrapped - Why Queen Bees Can Have It All
Special Event | Science Unwrapped
Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the free, public outreach program of USU's College of Arts and Sciences. Our events begin with a brief presentation, and are followed by hands-on learning activities and refreshments. At our March 20 event: All living things, including people, face trade-offs. We only have so much time and energy to accomplish the things we want to do. Animals strive to reproduce, live as long as possible and defend their young, but sometimes they have to give up one or more of these goals. Queen bees, on the other hand, have lots of helpers that enable them to avoid more trade-offs than most other animals, and to accomplish more of what they want to do. USU biologist Karen Kapheim and her graduate students study the fascinating lives of social bees. Karen will tell us about the lives of queen bees, and will share what these creatures can teach us about evolutionary processes.
