Alumni Exhibition & Tiny Houses

Arts/Entertainment

The Alumni Exhibition will feature work of three former USU Art + Design BFA students who recently receive their MFA’s from Indiana University and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Jonathan Christensen Caballero graduated with his MFA in ceramics from Indiana University in 2020. Jiggs Henry graduated with his MFA in printmaking from Indiana University spring of 2021. Jake Vinson also graduate this past spring with an MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Tiny House Exhibit / Interior Design and Architecture Program This exhibit shows a comprehensive project between Architectural Graphics I + II and CADD I + II. The project outline is simple: design a small residence for two people, approximately 500 sqft per level. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. Students begin their design by abstracting an object, which then develops into architecture. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

Top of Utah Museum Week Kickoff on the Quad

Cultural

Join your USU museums on the northeast corner of the Quad to celebrate museums in northern Utah. Museums from around campus will share information about special programming and ways to be involved in your campus museums. Take time to learn about the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, which cares for more than 5,500 objects related to modern and contemporary art of the American West; find out what the Intermountain Herbarium offers students through its extensive digital and physical collection of botanical specimens from around the world; learn more about the specimens preserved at the USU Geology Museum; enjoy talking with members of the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum; and finally discover opportunities for research using the Museum of Anthropology's global collection of objects.

Hybrid Applied Mathematics Seminar

Conference/Seminar

Talk Title: Solving Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Problems with Reduced Order Models and Neural Networks

Speaker: Dr. Zilong Song Department of Math & Stat, USU

Abstract: The friction stir welding process can be modelled using a system of heat transfer and Navier-Stokes equations with a shear dependent viscosity. Finding numerical solutions of this system of nonlinear partial differential equations over a set of parameter space, however, is extremely time-consuming. Therefore, it is desirable to find a computationally efficient method that can be used to obtain an approximation of the solution with acceptable accuracy. In this talk, we present a reduced basis method for solving the parametrized coupled system of heat and Navier-Stokes equations using a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). In addition, we apply a machine learning algorithm based on an artificial neural network (ANN) to learn (approximately) the relationship between relevant parameters and the POD coefficients. Our computational experiments demonstrate that substantial speed-up can be achieved while maintaining reasonable accuracy.
