Utah State University (USU) held its 2018 Counselor Conference, inviting high school counselors from across the state to learn about important updates on USU processes, such as recruiting, the university system, admissions, open houses, scholarships, and more. This event has been ongoing for more than ten years and has proven critical in establishing relationships with counselors to expand USU’s recruiting efforts. More than 250 counselors throughout Utah registered for the two-day event, and attended at USU in Logan on Thursday, September 20, or in Salt Lake on Friday, September 21.

“USU is consistently updating and improving procedures with the goal of helping future Aggies,” said Jennifer Loscher, a counselor at Ridgeline High School. “It’s great to meet with the USU team in person to have all of our questions answered, as well as network with other counselors to get ideas.”

The conference began with a welcome from Robert Wagner, vice president of Academic & Instructional Services, then presentations from Katie Jo North, director of admissions, Corey Mikkelsen, associate director of recruitment, and Craig Whyte, associate director of enrollment & recruitment. For the first time, each of USU’s colleges had tables and booths set up at the event where high school counselors could meet with representatives and find out more about their specific programs.

“This not only gives us an opportunity to explain the direction USU is headed and how it will benefit high school counselors, but also allows us to receive valuable feedback to see where we can improve,” said North. “USU’s mission is to be accessible, and one way we accomplish that is by meeting in person with the counselors who will be helping high school seniors and juniors prepare for higher education.”

After the presentations, the conference opened up to a Q&A session. Attendees were also given the new USU viewbook, scholarship sheets and posters, and handouts on USU’s regional campuses. Additionally, each of USU’s colleges had a table with representatives to answer individual questions.
