Synopsis

This Honors Book Lab will focus on reading and discussing A Dominant Character: The Radical Science and Restless Politics of JBS Haldane by Samanth Subramanian. The book is a biography of JBS Haldane, a brilliant and controversial scientist and larger-than-life character who made major contributions to genetics and evolutionary biology during the first half of the 20th century. Students will explore the scientific and political ideas that shaped Haldane's life and work, as well as the broader historical context in which he lived. In this way, we will analyze the human and personal dimensions of science and the interactions between science and ideology. This book should be of interest to students with interests at the intersection of science, history, and politics.
