Although pius is the basis of the English word pious, the Latin word carries wider connotations than religious faithfulness. It implies an obedience to all of society: a respect for one's elders, the protection and education of children, and the defense of the state. Moreover, to the Romans, being pius held the promise of happiness in the afterlife. |
