The asterisk (*) before an Indo-European word or verbal base signals the form has been reconstructed and is not attested in any actual written evidence. There are, of course, no actual Proto-Indo-European documents since Indo-European cultures did not adopt writing until long after the break-up and diffusion of Indo-European culture.
