It's a general truth of history that the later one goes in time, the easier it is to situate events chronologically. This principle certainly holds for the historical records of the Holy Lands. That is, the more recent an event is in the Bible, the more likely one is to find external sources from other lands corroborating it (or not). Assyrian records, for example, confirm the Bible's general account of the demise of Israel in 722 BCE, and Babylonian records do much the same for the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BCE to Nebuchadnezzar's army, the overture to the Babylonian Captivity. |
