All but one of the names listed here are Greek. Pentateuch, for instance, means "five bound (volumes)," Genesis "birth," Exodus "the road out," Leviticus "relating to the Levites," and Deuteronomy "second (version of the) laws." That Greek names predominate here shows two things: the dominance of later Hellenistic (late Greek) scholarly traditions in the editing and publication of these texts, and that much of Hebrew culture has passed to the West only indirectly, through Greco-Roman channels. |
