Because of the later ravages of iconoclasm, a seventh- and eighth-century movement to destroy art work—we'll look it into further in Chapter 14—few paintings or portraits survive from Justinian's time. The movement was, however, more powerful in the East than the
West, meaning that Ravenna in Italy was out of the iconoclasts' reach and works like the Ravenna mosaic escaped destruction.
