| Byzantine iconoclasts based their reasoning on a very strict
reading of the Bible's second commandment, "Thou shalt not create graven
images," which they interpreted as forbidding all realistic art. The
result was the demolition of many fine paintings and mosaics from the 600's
and 700's CE, one of the greatest tragedies ever in art history.
