Sophocles not only won more times at the Dionysia than any other playwright—at least eighteen times, which gives him something on the order of a seventy-five percent success rate!—but, on those few occasions he lost, he never placed lower than second. To understand how much of an accomplishment this is, one must look at Sophocles' great rival Euripides, a brilliant dramatist in his own right but with a much lower success rate. During his playwriting career, Euripides won only five times at the Dionysia, one of those a posthumous victory.
