To seal the case that it is unhistorical, the Romulus and Remus tale is a near duplicate of a well-known Greek foundation myth, that of Amphion and Zethus, the founders of the city of Thebes according to Greek legend. Both tales involve what are clearly fictitious duos who, furthermore, bear resemblances to other historical fabrications pre-dating classical civilization, for example, the myth of Sargon of Akkad and the story of Moses in the Hebrew scriptures.
