This suggests that the remainder of
Plautus' extant plays were derived from the works of New Comedy playwrights, even
though there is some evidence that one or two of Plautus' comedies are based on
models from Greek Middle Comedy. In particular, Plautus' Poenulus ("The
Little Carthaginian") and Amphitryo (a parody of the Greek myths
surrounding Hercules and his mortal father Amphitryo) seem to have Middle Comedy
forebears. As yet, there is no credible evidence that any of Plautus' plays were
derived from Old Comedy, despite the affinity of style Aristophanes and Plautus
share.
