Assessment
Assessment Method and Benchmark
Based on the USU Assessment Handbook, grades serve as an indirect measure of assessment. This means that they can provide evidence suggesting students are likely achieving their learning objectives. As such, our initial strategy involves relying on grades as the primary assessment metric. However, we are committed to exploring and implementing direct measures to improve the evaluation.
Each semester, the instructors of a selected list of courses will collect the grades of the Math and Stat majors, which will then be uploaded into a separate Department Assessment sheet. The correlation between these grades and the satisfactory fulfillment of the learning objectives will be determined by the Assessment Coordinator, who is appointed by the Department Head.
Assessment Coordinator
The Assessment Coordinator, a member of the Undergraduate Studies Committee, is in charge of:
- Presenting to the faculty an annual summary of the key findings
- Presenting to the faculty any suggested adjustments to the programs, previously discussed and proposed by the Undergraduate Committee
- Presenting to the faculty the mechanisms to implement any suggested adjustments
- Stating the goals for the next year
- Reminding the Instructors of the selected courses that they must align their course evaluations with the learning outcomes
- Ensure that the Instructors of the selected courses upload the data into the Department Assessment Sheet
Benchmark
We will say that a yearly evaluation of a major is satisfactory when in each of the courses that are being evaluated in that year 90% of the students have A or B grades.
