Homework # 8

Glen Erickson

I chose to summarize the handout on Web-based Visualization Components for this assignment. I was interested to find that this article was written by an individual who is in the private industry and perhaps has some bias points of view. It was refreshing however to see that his take on this subject was for the most part impartial. He made some very interesting comments and brought to light some important facts facing the acceptance of not only his product, but the acceptance of the Internet it self. He made reference to three ways that the Internet effects science and particulary statistics. First, it has already become a dominant infrastructure for data dissemination. Second, the net will connect producers directly with consumers. Third, opportunities for new and better data analysis methods. With the continued acceptance of the Internet just over the past two years many of these things are already starting to become prominent factors. He address the fact that his product was not particularly well received among net users and states some reasons for this analysis. He discusses several technology constrains and how they effect visual data analysis.

He discusses several visual graphic examples and how this product affects them. He summaries that the net will grow in its acceptance(which it already has) and how this growth will affect the use of his product. I believe that the net has grown so much in the past two years that there is a place for just the thing he promoted in this article. I found no references to any web sites in this article, so I base my reasons strictly from the article.
