Activity 2): (10 Points)

Group work of 2 students:
Explore one of these sites for 20 minutes and summarize its highlights.
Provide a 5 minute presentation of the main features of your site.

Homework 2): (10 Points)

Group work of 2 students:
Provide a short summary (one page) on the main idea and concepts behind your site.

Homework 3): (10 Points)

Individual work:
Select ONE of the topics below and exactly describe how you can locate the data. You are NOT allowed to use a "general" search engine and should start at one of the data sources on the Web discussed before. However, you are also NOT allowed to start at the page you explored during Activities 2). For example, if you explored AmeriStat, you cannot use AmeriStat again as your starting point for this excercise even though you know that information on one of these topics below may be found easily using AmeriStat. You ARE allowed to use a "local" search engine within the data source site, e.g., in AmeriStat, if such a local search engine exists. As an answer to this question, you should indicate the steps you used to locate the data and list the final site(s) that could serve as an answer for our data needs.

  1. Locate a Web site that lists earthquakes in Utah since 1990.
  2. Locate a Web site that deals with hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) in Utah.
  3. Locate a Web site that provides us with informatation on heart diseases (another term for heart diseases is cardiovascular diseases) in Africa.
  4. Locate a Web site that provides us with information on unemployment rates in Utah.
  5. Locate a Web site that provides us with age structure in Utah.

The homework parts have to be submitted by e-mail to symanzik@sunfs.math.usu.edu by 8:40am on Monday 5/15/2000. Just use plain text or html (but no text processing program) so I can directly post them on the Web afterwards.
