Stat 250, Section 701, Homework Assignment 4 (Due 6/15/98 in class)
- 1) [24 Points] Please work on the following textbook exercises in
Blaisdell (Second edition):
- Exercise 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.19, 5.20, 5.21 [1/2 Point each]
- Exercise 5.26, 5.28, 5.32, 5.33, 5.41, 5.45 [1 Point each]
- Exercise 5.56, 5.57, 5.60, 5.66 [1 Point each]
- Exercise 6.2, 6.4, 6.6, 6.7, 6.8 [1/2 Point each]
- Exercise 6.17, 6.18, 6.29, 6.35 [1 Point each]
- Exercise 6.49, 6.53, 6.60, 6.63 [1 Point each]
- 2) [3 Points] For the "Student - Point Gain/Loss" example used in class
on 6/9/98, draw a probability histogram, draw a spike graph,
determine the cumulative probability function F(y), and draw
a graph of F(y). Mark clearly which points are included / not
included at particular positions in the graph of F(y).
- 3) [8 Points] Once again, you have to use a Web browser to answer
this question. Use a search engine such as
http://www.excite.com/,
http://www.lycos.com/, or
http://www.yahoo.com/
and search for Webpages that relate to statistics and your
major subject.
On top of these pages you usually have a box
where you can type in the keywords you are looking for.
You can type in a single keyword, multiple keywords separated
by a blanc, e.g., kw1 kw2 kw3 (in this case, the search engine will look for
kw1 or kw2 or kw3), and multiple keywords with a leading +,
e.g., +kw1 +kw2 +kw3 (in this case, the search engine will look for
kw1 and kw2 and kw3). If you try "text" where text appears in double quotes
and may be a longer sentence, you should find pages that contain
these words in exactly the same order (but eventually with a few
other words inbetween).
As an example, I used
http://www.excite.com/
on 6/10/98 and tried
- +Statistics +Nursing (20136 hits)
- +Statistics +Nursing +Software (5447 hits)
- +Statistics +Poetry (9434 hits)
- "Government Statistics" (1000 hits)
As an answer to this question
- i) indicate which search engine you used and which keywords
you have searched,
- ii) indicate 3 to 5 interesting Web addresses that are
related to statistics and your major subject (please list this
subject again on your answer sheet), and
- iii) visit the pages from ii) above and provide a 2 or 3
sentence summary on what this page is about, e.g., providing
particular data, data about this subject (income distribution,
number of people with this profession), information on
(downloadable) software particularly helpful in this subject,
information on new statistical methodology for this subject, etc.
Please turn in your answer
to this question on a separate sheet. I would appreciate
a computer-written answer so I will
be able to follow some of the links you indicated afterwards
without having problems with individual handwritings
(as we have seen, one small typo or letter I can not read
and a Web page can not be found).
Please make a copy (or second printout) so I can keep
your sheet and can hopefully incorporate some of the things
you suggest into my next Stat 250 class. Thanks a lot.
