Originally a dentist, Jerry McKellar began making art as a hobby before pursuing a career as a full-time artist. His sculpture First of the Season is on display in the lobby of the Natural Resources building. A figural piece, it shows a Native American offering his first catch of the fishing season to his religious deities. It also reveals McKellar’s background in science, as the skeletal structure and muscles of the man’s face are not only anatomically correct but also quite detailed. First of the Season pays homage to nature, a fact signified by its placement in the building housing the academic departments of Wildland Resources, Environment and Society, and Watershed Sciences.
