Online Practical Teacher Training (OPTT)

About This Program

Utah State University's (USU) Online Practical Teacher Training (OPTT) program prepares Utah-based special educators to provide evidence-based academic instruction and behavior management to preschoolers with disabilities, K-12 students with mild/moderate disabilities, or K-12 students with severe disabilities. OPTT is not available outside of Utah.

USU's OPTT is available to special education teachers with associate educator licenses and special education paraprofessionals (with or without a bachelor's degree). Applicants must be working in a district or charter school that agrees to collaborate with USU's Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling to provide classroom support throughout the program.

After completing the five-semester program, students will receive a Bachelor's of Science in Special Education and qualify for a special education license. As a 2nd bachelor's, the program takes two years. If this is your first bachelor's degree, additional courses will be required.

Out-of-State and International Student Disclaimer
Utah is a member of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) and Utah State University (USU) is an approved SARA institution, which means we adhere to established standards for offering post-secondary e-learning programs in all member states. Please review our state authorizations to see if this program is offered in your state and our process for student complaints against the university.
International students studying at USU on the F-1 or J-1 visa must have the majority of their classes each semester be face-to-face in order to meet the physical presence requirement to maintain their visa status. Students on the F-1 visa must enroll in classes at the Logan or USU Eastern campuses. Students on the J-1 visa must enroll in classes at the Logan campus.
