Educational Background
Biography
My role statement emphases are roughly equal in teaching, research, and service.
My teaching and mentoring accomplishments have been recognized nationally by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council on Undergraduate Research and locally at USU and other institutions.
My research accomplishments have been recognized by a national prize from by the American Physical Society.
My service contributions have been recognized by awards from USU and Union College. I wrote the applications that yielded the Physics Department's University Excellence in Teaching Award (2005) and the American Physical Society's Department of Distinction Award (2011).
Teaching Interests
I have taught 40 different undergraduate and 4 graduate courses at 4 institutions, and developed & introduced 24 of these into the curriculum. I have served as external reviewer for teaching programs at 8 colleges; I have organized 5 regional & national conferences on undergraduate research; I have run a 3-year NSF-REU program (at USU) in nonlinear dynamics for 40 students. My textbooks are: Komplexität: das gezähmte Chaos (Birkhäuser, 1995, with M. Frame & A. Ehlers) ISBN 3-7643-5132-2; Chaos Under Control: The Art & Science of Complexity (Freeman, 1994, with M. Research Interests
I have, to date, 65 refereed publications (on gravity & fields, condensed matter physics, nonlinear dynamics, biophysics, & computational circuitry), with 45 student co-authors; 40 professional society presentations, with 25 student presenters. My students’ & my work has appeared in feature articles in Discover Magazine, Science News, & the Mathematical Calendar, been reviewed by Nature Science Update & in the magazines BBC Wildlife (UK), Swiat Nauki (Poland), & Donga Science (Korea), & been cited on Wikipedia & on over 40 other websites in eight countries.
