New Chief Fundraiser Named at Utah State University

Utah State University has selected Matthew T. White to be its new chief fundraiser as vice president for Advancement and president of the USU Foundation.
White is the associate vice president of Collegiate Development at Kansas State University where he helped the school raise more than $1 billion in a recently completed capital campaign. His fundraising experience includes major gifts, endowments, principal gifts and annual giving.
“The search was an extensive process that drew applicants from across the nation,” said Mark R. McLellan, chair of the 10-member search committee. “Mr. White was the best of the best of our applicants.”
As a lifelong student and teacher, White said he is passionate about working with development, marketing and alumni teams, along with academic leaders to achieve annual and long-term fundraising success.
“I am honored to join the Utah State University community and have been very impressed by everyone’s passion for the land-grant mission and commitment to excellence,” he said. “I look forward to working with leadership, faculty, staff and volunteers to advance philanthropy at Utah State University.”
USU President Noelle Cockett welcomes White’s fundraising skills and experience.
“We reached lofty goals in our last comprehensive campaign and look forward to achieving even more in the years ahead,” she said. “It was important for us to find a person with extensive professional fundraising experience in higher education, and who also engenders trust and support. His land-grant connections were very important to us and played a role in our selection. We are pleased to welcome Mr. White into the Aggie family.”
White earned a bachelor’s in secondary education from the University of Evansville in 2000, and a master’s in higher education administration in 2004 from Saint Louis University, where he is now working towards a doctorate in higher education administration and public policy. His research and expertise is on improving effective practices for governing boards and the factors that affect policy changes. He expects to graduate in May 2018.
He has more than 15 years of development experience and is an adjunct professor for the Staley School of Leadership Studies where he also co-taught the Senior Nonprofit Internship course. Prior to his extensive responsibilities at KSU, he was vice president and chief development officer of Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, St. Louis, MO, where he supervised a hospital development, marketing and public relations team.
White will spearhead a new university-wide fundraising campaign that builds off a previous endeavor in which the university raised $512 million in donations — more than doubling its original goal by the time the campaign ended in 2012. Since then, the university has continued to receive several major gifts. During the past year, the university raised nearly $89 million in new donations, including a joint $50 million gift to the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business in May, the largest gift in the university’s 129-year history.
White, who starts on Jan. 8, replaces Dave Cowley and Neil Abercrombie who have been acting vice presidents for Advancement since April 2016. Cowley continues as vice president for Business and Finance and Abercrombie will continue in his role as vice president for Federal and State Relations.
