USU Welcomes Mormon Tabernacle Choir & Orchestra at Temple Square Sept. 22
Under the direction of Mack Wilberg, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir & Orchestra at Temple Square will perform at the Daines Concert Hall on the USU campus on September 22 at 2 and 7 p.m.
The program for the Logan performance features many genres of music, ranging from classical choral literature to contemporary sacred and popular music.
Craig Jessop, dean of the Caine College of the Arts, was music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir from 1999-2008.
“The choir performed in the Kent Concert Hall when it first opened in 1967,” Jessop said. “To have them back for an inaugural performance in the Daines Concert Hall is an honor and a privilege.”
For more than a century, the choir has given voice to the hopes, joys, trials and triumphs of people around the world. The chorus has performed worldwide, from Europe to Asia to U.S. presidential inaugurations. They are dedicated to the universal language of music that has the power to bring joy, peace and healing to its listeners while transcending cultural and generational boundaries to bring people around the world together through music.
Mack Wilberg was appointed music director of the choir and orchestra in 2008 and is responsible for all musical and creative aspects in rehearsals, concerts, tours and recordings, as well as the weekly broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word. He was formerly a professor at Brigham Young University (BYU) and is active as a composer, arranger, guest conductor and clinician. He received his bachelor’s degree from BYU and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Southern California.
“The Caine College of the Arts is thrilled to host the Mormon Tabernacle Choir & Orchestra at Temple Square as one of the capstone events of the university’s Year of the Arts,” Jessop said. “I am very proud of the time I spent with them and I am excited to bring this rare treat to the Cache Valley audience.”
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir & Orchestra at Temple Square will perform at 2 and 7 p.m. in the Daines Concert Hall on September 22. Tickets are $15-30 and $5 for USU students with ID.
