LOGAN, Utah — Nathan Scott, a Utah State University alumnus and current Stewardship and Development Research Assistant for the Caine College of the Arts, is stepping into the spotlight as Chauvelin, the complex and driven antagonist in Music Theatre West’s upcoming production of “The Scarlet Pimpernel.”

Based on Baroness Orczy’s famous 20th-century novel, “The Scarlet Pimpernel” dramatizes the French Revolution and the battle for liberty, equality and fraternity.

“What excites me most about playing this role is navigating Chauvelin’s complicated past and portraying his emotional journey on the stage as he sings of revolution, love and betrayal,” Scott said. “His emotional arc is as intense as it is tragic.”

A 2021 graduate in Music Therapy, Scott credits USU for laying the groundwork for both his professional and artistic pursuits.

“I was fortunate to study under excellent voice professors, especially Dr. Errik Hood, who made it a priority to train his students in a wide range of vocal styles,” Scott said. “I was given many opportunities to perform, through master classes, recitals, operas, music theatre showcases and regional university singing competitions.”Scott was initially drawn to audition for this role because of his love for theatre and the theatre quality that comes from Music Theatre West.

“Music Theatre West is known for its professional-quality productions, often held at the Eccles Theatre, and for featuring live orchestras that elevate the atmosphere and contribute to the show's polished, immersive feel,” Scott said. “I was cast as Jack Kelly in their 2023 production of ‘Newsies,’ and the only word I can use to truly describe that experience — from the set design and costumes to the music — is explosive, especially because of the directors, the live orchestra and the energy of the audience.”

Scott remains deeply engaged in the arts through his current role at the Caine College of the Arts.

“My passion for the arts has truly been reignited, and that renewed sense of purpose has motivated me to pursue further study, beginning with my current Master’s in Higher Education and Student Affairs, eventually leading toward advanced work in Educational Leadership, Cultural Policy and Arts Administration,” Scott said.

Scott’s journey, from student to professional, reflects Utah State University’s mission to empower individuals to lead lives of involvement, innovation and impact through exceptional education, discovery and community contribution.

“The connections I’ve made through community theatre have brought so many incredible people into my life; directors, co-actors, production managers, and all the others who make a show possible,” Scott said. “I think that’s the real reason I continue to perform.”

“The Scarlet Pimpernel” will run June 20-28 at the Ellen Eccles Theatre. For ticket information, visit the website.
