USU's 8th Annual Paper & Clay Exhibition Showcases Emerging Printmaking, Ceramic Artists

By Emma Lee |

LOGAN, Utah — The Department of Art + Design, in collaboration with the Caine College of the Arts, presents the 8th annual Paper & Clay juried exhibition, running from Feb. 3 to March 7 at the Tippetts & Eccles Galleries. This national exhibition highlights outstanding ceramic and printmaking works by undergraduate and graduate students from across the United States.

Founded by printmaking professorKathy Puzey and ceramics lab manager and instructor Todd Hayes, the exhibition was created to provide students with a professional platform to showcase their work.

“Todd Hayes and I developed this idea eight years ago to offer students the opportunity to exhibit in a gallery setting, have their work juried by a professional artist, and do so at an affordable cost,” Puzey said.

This year’s show features 75 works from students representing 25 institutions, all created within the past two years using either paper or clay. The exhibition offers a glimpse into the innovation and craftsmanship emerging in contemporary ceramics and printmaking programs across the country.

Students submit their work with a $20 entry fee for up to three pieces. USU faculty conduct the initial selection, while a guest juror — a professional artist affiliated with the Communitas Lecture Series — determines the award winners. The juror alternates each year between a printmaker and a ceramicist.

USU’s ceramics and printmaking programs are widely recognized for their emphasis on creativity, technical excellence and community engagement. The ceramics program offers 15,000 square feet of studio space, 20 kilns and international study opportunities, while the printmaking program blends traditional techniques with contemporary practices.

“These fields are deeply rooted in collaboration and networking,” Puzey noted. “This exhibition is a testament to the incredible work being produced by student artists today.”

The public is invited to attend a free reception from 6-7 p.m. Feb. 20 to celebrate the artists and their work. For more details, visit the online calendar listing.
