What it is

Physical health refers to an individual’s bodily wellbeing and how well it is functioning. Physical health can include multiple factors such as diet, exercise, or drug-use.

Why it matters

Good physical health is necessary for people to adequately meet their daily needs, actively participate in their community, and to live long, happy lives. Research suggests that illness or premature death due to poor physical health is a leading cause of family poverty, while improved health in a community can lead to more economic growth overall.

What you can do

Many aspects of health, such as diet and exercise, are heavily affected by personal choices. However, research has found that various community characteristics can improve opportunities for people to personally maintain their physical health. In addition, other community characteristics, such as air pollution, can directly cause illness or death. We recommend that city leaders consider factors like physical activity, nutrition, health care, and environmental health by focusing on (1) the built-environment to increase active transport, (2) physical health activities that give people the opportunity to be physically active, (3) ensuring access to healthy food and high-quality health care, and (4) environmental factors to improve air and water quality. Below you can find a list of targeted resources to learn more about physical health and ways to improve it in your community.
