ACT
There are two distinct ways to take the ACT, the ACT National Test and the ACT Residual Test. Website: www.act.org
National ACT
The National ACT is the same test given in many high schools. The most important aspect of this test is that it provides scores that are valid nationally, at any school that accepts ACT as an admission exam. It is available 5 times yearly-always on Saturdays (many high schools participate in only 2 or 3 of the 5 dates). Students must register through ACT (by mail, phone, or Internet) approximately 5 weeks in advance of the test date.
Residual ACT
The Residual ACT is exactly like the National ACT except that scores are valid only at the college or university where the test is actually taken. Residual ACTs taken at USU provide scores valid for USU purposes only. A student cannot take the ACT Residual at USU and use scores for other schools (one partial exception: USU's ACT Residual may be used for the USU/Weber State University Cooperative Nursing Program-though they will not be valid for admission to other programs at Weber State University). Residual ACT scores are not valid for NCAA Clearinghouse purposes.
Actuarial Exams
Exams for entrance into the Society of Actuaries (SOA). Actuary Exams are given twice yearly, in May and November. Contact Society of Actuaries for cost and other registration information. Website: www.soa.org
GMAT
Graduate Management Admission Test is for entrance to graduate level business and management programs. Website: www.mba.com
GRE (Graduate Record Exam)
When a graduate program asks for GRE scores, they usually mean the General GRE only. If the school or program also requires a specific Subject GRE score (i.e. Biology), they will usually make that requirement clear in their admissions instructions. Website: www.gre.org
GRE General Exam
GRE Subject Exam
LSAT (Law School Admission Test)
MAT (Miller Analogies Test)
A graduate school admissions test accepted by a limited number of schools and/or graduate programs. Less expensive and much shorter than the GRE, the MAT does not include separate verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections. Used primarily by programs that do not require advanced mathematics skill. Website: www.tpcweb.com.
MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
Medical College Admission Test, the test for entrance to medical school. the MCAT is given as a computer based exam on approximately 21 dates yearly, with most dates falling between the months of April and September. Utah State University participates in approximately 13 of the 21 national dates. Website: www.aamc.org/students/mcat
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
A test of basic English language reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills used as an admission criterion (undergraduate and graduate) for those whose native language is other-than English. Website: www.toefl.org.
