Anne Spranger Scholarship

The Anne Spranger Scholarship honors the remarkable contributions of Anne Spranger, an influential designer and dedicated teacher and mentor at Utah State University. Anne was one of the founders of the Residential Landscape Design & Construction major and has left an indelible mark on the university and its students over the past 30 years.

Throughout her distinguished career, Professor Spranger has empowered students to excel in the landscape industry with a more sensitive approach to designing in the Intermountain Region. Anne received her bachelor’s degree in art from Colorado State with an emphasis on sculpture. She then continued her education at Utah State University to pursue a master’s in landscape architecture. Throughout her varied educational experiences, she developed a love for the Intermountain region, good design principles, and a passion to preserve the region’s beauty for many generations to come. This passion was felt by all her students as she educated them in planting design, color theory, textures, scales and seasonality all within the framework of waterwise landscapes. She was also instrumental, along with David Anderson and Bill Varga in conceptualizing the USU Botanical Center, with the mission of educating the greater community on water conservation, sustainability, and eco-responsibility. Anne’s commitment to and knowledge of native and/or well-adapted exotic landscape plants was a significant contribution to that work. This was in the later 1990’s when not many were talking about waterwise landscapes. When implementing the Botanical Center’s designs, Anne was on site, directing traffic to where and how plants were to be installed. As an instructor, Anne was hands-on (she wasn’t afraid of getting her hands dirty) and highly interested in student success and learning. A former student said this about Anne’s commitment to student success, “Anne's teaching style brought such a valuable insight into real world landscape design that helped open my eyes to the joy of this profession. The field of landscape design/architecture can be taken in so many ways, from large to small scale. She was invested in students and helped us look ahead to the future to help us understand what we should be focusing on. It was because of this guidance that I chose to pursue my MLA and become a licensed landscape architect.”

This scholarship aims to continue Professor Spranger's legacy by supporting students who demonstrate academic excellence, creativity, and a passion for residential landscape design and construction in the Intermountain West. It is awarded to those who exhibit the qualities that Professor Spranger so profoundly instilled in her students: a commitment to sustainable practices (especially low-water landscapes), and a dedication to enhancing the beauty and functionality of residential landscapes.

Recipients of the Professor Anne Spranger Scholarship are selected based on their academic achievements, leadership potential, and a demonstrated passion for promoting water-wise landscapes at the residential scale. The recipient must be a Junior or Senior in the RLDC major. This scholarship not only provides financial support but also encourages students to carry forward Professor Spranger's vision and impact, contributing positively to the Utah landscape design community.
