Doug Alder

In Memory of Douglas D. Alder

Douglas Alder

Douglas D. Alder was born on Nov. 10, 1932, in Salt Lake City.  He graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah before serving in the Swiss-Austrian Latter-day Saint Mission.  He returned to finish his bachelor's and master's degree in history at the University of Utah. He met Elaine Marie Reiser while in college, and, after serving in the Utah National Guard, they married in 1958 and later relocated to Eugene, Ore., where he earned his doctorate in European history at the University of Oregon.

Doug's academic journey included a particular interest in Utah's history.  Throughout his career, he remained active in scholarly circles, notably as president of the Mormon History Association during the "New Mormon History" movement.  Doug's commitment to education was evident in his 23-year tenure as a professor at Utah State University, where he earned the title of "Professor of the Year." Doug faced significant challenges when, soon after assuming the presidency of Dixie College (now Utah Tech University) in 1986, the governor mandated a 6% budget cut for higher education.  Undeterred, Doug, known for his can-do attitude, energy, and extensive network, transformed the small college into a thriving institution.  His initiatives included creating a national advisory committee, launching a capital campaign, and strengthening the academic program.  He also made personal sacrifices by eliminating presidential perks.

He passed away at the age of 91 after battling Parkinson's disease and cancer.  Beyond his academic achievements, he served in leadership roles within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and various cultural organizations.  Doug's deep love for college students and belief in their potential defined his legacy.  His son highlighted his influence on students' lives, describing him as a mentor who believed in their ability to make a significant impact.

Doug's impact extended beyond academia, shaping the lives of his children, and leaving a legacy in history and education.  His passion for learning, commitment to truth, and ability to reconcile faith with rational learning defined his life approach and profoundly influenced those who knew him.

Please join his family in honoring Doug and supporting his passion for learning by donating to the Doug & Elaine Alder Honors Endowment at Utah State University.  The scholarship supports students in the University Honors Program.
