Michael Lyons

In Memory of Michael Lyons

Michael Lyons

Michael Lyons was a distinguished scholar and beloved teacher of United States Government and Politics whose influence at Utah State University spanned more than four decades. An emeritus professor of political science, Dr. Lyons was widely respected for his expertise in legislative politics and public policy.

Over the course of his career, Professor Lyons received multiple teaching awards in recognition of his extraordinary commitment to undergraduate education. His U.S. Legislative Politics course became a defining academic experience for generations of Aggies, challenging students to think critically, engage deeply with democratic institutions, and see public service as both an obligation and an opportunity. Countless former students credit Dr. Lyons with inspiring their paths into government, law, academia, and civic leadership.

Professor Lyons valued intellectual curiosity, balance, and engagement with the world - principles he modeled both inside and outside the classroom. An avid fly fisher, skier, gardener, and traveler, he approached each pursuit with the same intensity and joy that defined his teaching.

Born outside Buffalo, New York, and raised in California, Dr. Lyons earned all his degrees in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He chose to teach at Utah State University for its academic quality, its mission as a land grant institution, and its commitment to undergraduate students. He often said that USU’s best students could compete with the best anywhere. A belief reflected in the success of his graduates in law schools, doctoral programs, and public service careers nationwide.

Dr. Lyons believed strongly in universities as institutions central to democracy, where teaching, research, and open dialogue prepare students to shape the future responsibly. His passion for teaching, commitment to students, and belief in the power of education and public service continue through the Mike Lyons Scholars Program. Gifts made in his memory ensure that future generations of Aggies will experience the same inspiration, rigor, and encouragement that defined his remarkable career.

Through this program, Mike Lyons’ legacy lives on in classrooms, in conversations, and in the lives of students preparing to serve the public good.

The Mike Lyons Scholars Program

The Mike Lyons Scholars Program honors Dr. Lyons’ legacy by supporting exceptional undergraduate students who demonstrate strong promise in politics, public service, and civic engagement. The program extends the political science curriculum beyond the classroom, offering a unique, immersive experience for students eager to participate actively in the political process.

Scholars are selected based on academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and a demonstrated interest in current events and democratic institutions. Participants commit to staying informed on political developments and attend a weekly discussion group focused on contemporary political issues, elections, and public policy. Through comparative analysis and spirited discussion, students examine candidates, party dynamics, and the broader political health of the nation.

Central to the program is Dr. Lyons’ vision of students learning from real world engagement. The program aspires to create opportunities for meaningful interaction with policymakers, political practitioners, and faculty—bridging theory and practice in ways that reflect Mike Lyons’ approach to teaching and mentorship.
