The Bastian family has long been part of the agricultural heritage of Herriman, Utah; they were among the first farming families in the area and are now one of the last remaining operations. Farming was central to the lives of Mary, Emily, and the late David Bastian, whose days were shaped by the land and animals they cared for. Although the family home was in Midvale, their time and energy were devoted to the farm in Herriman. Days were spent working side by side, and evenings often brought continued conversations about the farm, reflecting how deeply it was woven into their family life.
For David, the long hours and hard work were more than worthwhile. Farming was not just an occupation, but a way of life he was determined to preserve. Mary recalls that when there was an opportunity to sell the farm at a high price, David would not consider it. Their connection to the land and the life it provided meant far more. His dedication was unwavering; he rarely missed a day, even when he was unwell.
In addition to farming, the Bastian family has always valued community. David was deeply committed to his country and took great pride in his military service, the only time he stepped away from the farm. Through collaboration, the family also came to appreciate Utah State University Extension’s mission to support farmers, address agricultural challenges, and strengthen communities.
Today, Utah State University is honored to partner with the Bastian family to preserve agricultural land and continue this legacy of service. The Bastian Agricultural Center serves as a vital resource for the community, offering programs that support individuals and families across many areas of life. Extension faculty and staff provide guidance on nutrition and food safety, assist farmers and ranchers in building sustainable, productive operations and engage youth through 4-H leadership programs. Additional outreach includes gardening education for homeowners and equine-assisted services that support veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Utah State University Extension is proud to carry forward the Bastian family’s legacy, ensuring that their commitment to agriculture, community, and education continues to benefit future generations.
