Caine Lyric Theatre
The original Lyric Theatre was opened in downtown Logan in 1913 by the Thatcher family. The building was a replacement for the Thatcher Opera House that burned down on April 15, 1912 — the top news story in Cache Valley on the same day was the sinking of the Titanic.
After World War II, the theater was closed and fell into disrepair. Under brief consideration for demolition to make way for a bowling alley, W. Vosco Call and others at Utah State University worked to save the theater and guide its restoration. The theater reopened in the spring of 1961 with a production of “Hamlet” and Call starring in the title role.
The Lyric Theatre became the home of the Old Lyric Repertory Company in 1967, and was later placed on the Utah State Register of Historical Sites in 1971. The original Lyric Theatre became the Caine Lyric Theatre in 2001 following an expansion project. The Caine name acknowledged contributions from the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation, longtime supporters of the OLRC.
