Jon M. Huntsman Hall (1937-2018)

In December 2007, Utah State University announced that its College of Business would be renamed the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business, in recognition of a gift from Huntsman and his wife of $26 million. In 2016, Huntsman was the lead donor for the $50 million school of business building referred to as Jon M. Huntsman Hall.

Jon was born in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Sarah Kathleen Robison Huntsman and Alonzo Blaine Huntsman Sr. In 1950, the family moved to Palo Alto, California. Jon attended Palo Alto High School, where he became student body president. He married Karen Haight, daughter of David B. Haight, in June 1959, just weeks after he graduated from Wharton in the spring of 1959. In July 1959, Jon left to serve for two years in the U.S. Navy as an officer aboard the USS Calvert. He subsequently earned an MBA from the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business in 1966.

Jon served under former United States President Richard M. Nixon as special assistant to the president and as White House staff secretary. In 1970, he founded the Huntsman Container Corp. that focused on food packaging. He formed Huntsman Chemical Corp. in 1982 and more than a decade later, consolidated his companies as Huntsman Corp., producing materials used in a wide range of products, from textiles and paints to plastics and aviation components.

USU alum Dave Colling earned a bachelor’s in marketing from Colorado State University and an MBA from Utah State University. During a distinguished career, Dave worked with Henriksen/Butler (H/B) as a partner and vice president of sales and marketing; led a diversification strategy that included opening two new business units — Spacesaver Intermountain, specializing in high density and specialty storage, and H/B Services providing furniture installation and management services; and held majority shareholder stake and CEO position with H/B Intermountain Holdings.

Suzanne Pierce-Moore received a bachelor’s from USU in 1980 and a master’s in human resource economics in 1981 from the University of Utah. In 2002, Suzanne was inducted into the Utah State University Hall of Honor. As a loyal Aggie, she has held positions with USU’s Board of Trustees, including serving as chairwoman of the organization, and as a member of USU’s Foundation Board.

Kem Gardner’s career accomplishments include time as founder and president of the Boyer Company L.C., a firm that has developed more than 20-million-square-feet of real estate projects in the Intermountain West and other areas of the United States.

A very involved community member, Kem has spent time on the executive committee of the United Way, as the chair of the Salt Lake Board for Olympic Aid during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, as chair of The Salt Lake Chamber and on the Utah Board of Higher Education.

Scott Davis was a founder of Mountain West Small Business Finance, formerly known as Deseret Certified Development Company. Within the company, Scott has held various roles including president and chief executive officer. Mountain West is a private, non-profit corporation licensed and regulated by the U.S. Small Business Administration to administer the SBA 504 Loan Program.

William G. (Bill) Murray, Jr., spent his professional career in real estate finance, retiring as chair of the Global Real Estate Group at Orrick. Focusing on negotiating and documenting acquisitions and financing transactions, he did substantial work for pension fund advisors, construction and long-term lending, ground leasing, sale-leaseback financing, synthetic leases and development transactions. William was responsible for the leasing of numerous large retail, office, hotel, resort and industrial complexes. William graduated cum laude from Utah State University in 1972 with a bachelors’ in political science and a minor in history. A Logan native, Billie attended USU, and the couple have five children.

Shaw’s 88 Kitchen

The café in Huntsman Hall is named Shaw’s 88 Kitchen in honor of Duane and Marci Shaw. Both Aggies, Duane and Marci have supported USU students for many years and established several endowments at the university.

Duane grew up in the shadow of the big “A” atop Old Main and has been an Aggie since his earliest memories. All six members of his family attended and graduated from Utah State, as did five of their six spouses. Aggie pride and spirit runs deep.

After graduating with a bachelor’s in finance from Utah State University in 1973, Duane’s career has seen many accomplishments including time founding and becoming principal owner of Academy Mortgage Corporation, a national mortgage banking firm with its headquarters in Draper, Utah. Duane has also been involved with a number of other businesses, including land development, home construction, real estate investment and producing thoroughbred horses.
Marci attended Utah State in 1972 and has served as the managing member of Dumar, LLC, as well as other companies that the couple have been involved with. One of her greatest life accomplishments was being a stay-at-home mom and raising four children.

Mark Erickson has a distinguished career that includes being named the youngest person ever promoted to an officer, board of directors’ member and partner of Tanner & Company at age 32. He spent two years with the Division of Corporation Finance of the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). Mark is an alum of Utah State University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant. Jennifer earned a bachelor’s in English from USU in 1994. She was a school teacher for two years and a volunteer at the This is the Place State Park in Salt Lake City.

Larry Walther graduated with honors, as well as an MPA from University of Texas at Arlington. He then went on to earn a doctorate from Oklahoma State University. In fall 2007, Larry was part of an accreditation program review team sent to evaluate Utah State University’s Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. He liked what he saw and decided to move and take the department head position in the School of Accountancy when the opportunity presented itself. Larry’s teaching style focuses on rigor and excellence.

Mark Holland’s professional career includes accomplishments such as chairman and CEO of Intermountain Staffing Resource and owner of Ascend HR Solutions. Mark has visited campus several times and taught in the Executive Leadership class in Utah State University’s Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. He has also provided internship opportunities for human resources students and hosted dinners with students in conjunction with the Dine with Alumni event.

Kim and Sally Anderson are both Utah State University alumni. Kim earned a bachelor’s in marketing in 1974 and Sally earned a bachelor’s in elementary education in 1972. As owners of Kimander Properties, a real estate company, and Pace Custom Cases, a consumer goods company in Logan, the couple enjoy supporting their alma mater.

After earning an MBA from Utah State University, Young-Chul Hong left the United States to return to Korea to work for KISWIRE, a company his father founded in 1945. In addition to his business leadership, Young-Chul’s deep and enduring commitment to higher education is reflected both in his engagement with Pohang University of Science and Technology in Korea and his involvement with, and support of, educational initiatives at Utah State. His generosity to USU programs and scholarship funds enrich the educational experiences of students in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business and in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology. Mira Wie earned a bachelor’s in English literature from the Ehwa Women’s University, Korea.

Charlie and Trina Denson Classroom

After receiving a marketing degree from USU, Charlie Denson spent 35 years at Nike, beginning as the assistant store manager in Portland in 1979 and moving his way up to serve as the president of Nike Brand for 13 years. As president of the Nike Brand, Charlie was responsible for leading the strategy of one of the world’s most distinctive brands, overseeing all aspects of the global direction for the company’s consumer categories. An innovator in developing sales and distribution strategies, he was a driving force in Nike’s global growth as the company expanded into approximately 190 countries. An avid Aggie fan, Charlie was instrumental in Utah State’s unveiling of its new athletics brand and identity program in the spring of 2012. He received an Honorary Doctorate from USU in 2013.

Trina’s career accomplishments include owning and operating an event planning business. She has served on various boards including Cycle Oregon.

In September 1905, a group of 42 local citizens organized Lewiston State Bank to serve the local farmers of Lewiston, Utah. In 2015, the bank changed names and became what is now Alta Bank.

George H. “Herb” and Helen A. Champ Study Room

George Herbert “Herb” Champ was born in 1924 in Logan to Frederick Percival and Frances Winton Champ. He attended Logan City Schools and New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico, before serving in the infantry during WWII.

After the war, Herb returned to Logan to attend Utah State University, where he earned a degree in commerce in 1949. He remained a lifelong Aggie, where he was a member of the Old Main Society, received USU’s Distinguished Service Award, a College of Business Distinguished Executive Award and was a Life Member of the USU Partners Program.

After graduation from USU, Herb began his career at the Boise, Idaho, branch of Champ family-owned Utah Mortgage Loan Corporation. It was during this time that he met and fell in love with Helen Mae Adams, who he married in 1952. Herb and Helen returned to Logan in 1957. He became company manager two years later and then CEO in 1965, where he oversaw the sale of UMLC to First Security Corporation in 1967.

Steve Milovich Jr. was born in Price, Utah in 1956, the eldest of four children. His parents, Helen and Steven Milovich Sr. were first generation children of Italian and Serbian immigrants respectively. Steve attended school in Price, Utah, holding leadership positions at a very young age. He followed in his father’s footsteps and attended Utah State University, graduating with a degree in economics in 1979. He almost did not graduate, deciding not to return after completing his junior year. His father, Steve Sr., who played a major role in his life, drove his reluctant son back to school in the fall of his senior year to complete his degree — after which he went on to obtain an executive MBA from Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business. Upon graduation, Steve enjoyed a long and distinguished corporate career as a business and human resources executive with some of the world’s most successful and iconic companies, including The Walt Disney Company, PepsiCo and Honeywell. He retired from Disney and the corporate world to begin his second career as a business school professor, consultant and executive coach in 2018. He is president of Milovich Partners, a strategic human capital consulting, advisory and executive coaching company. He is also a senior lecturer in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business.

Drs. Myron and Ann Rice Classroom

Born in 1928 in Ashburn, Georgia, Ann Rice spent her life teaching and serving others across the country and around the world. An expert on personal and family finance, she taught at USU Brigham City and was the owner of commercial property in California, Georgia, Nevada and Utah. A committed philanthropist, Ann endowed scholarships at five universities, including Utah State, and has donated time as a member of several community boards and organizations. Myron received his doctorate from USU’s Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services, where he focused on curriculum development and supervision. He then served as a professor for San Jose State University and went on to join Santa Barbara City College as professor and head of business.

Harold and Ruth Dance Study Room

Harold Wintle Dance was born Sept. 24, 1924 in Blackfoot, Idaho. Harold contracted Polio at the age of three, which he said was a blessing because it motivated him, gave him determination, compassion and helped him learn to overcome obstacles.

He attended Utah State University, where he was very involved in a variety of organizations and student government. While there, he helped create and manage the Temporary Union Building, now the Taggart Student Center. He graduated from USU in 1948 and went on to attend and graduate from Harvard Business School. Upon returning to Logan, he first noticed his future wife, Ruth, while she was speaking at a stake conference at his church. They were married March 26, 1953.

Harold built a successful career in the field of financial planning and opened his own business, Harold Dance Brokerage, in 1961. He loved helping others prepare for retirement and financial security and thus founded the 457 Retirement Plan for educators, taught classes at USU and served on the College of Business Advisory Board.

Ruth Ballard Dance attended schools in Cache County, graduated from North Cache High School and attended Utah State University.

Vernon (Vern) Maughan Buehler attended school in Daniels and Malad, Idaho. Between his junior and senior year of high school, his family moved to Logan. He attended his senior year at South Cache in Hyrum where he met his sweetheart, MaRee Clawson. Vern was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon completing ROTC training and receiving his bachelor’s degree from Utah State Agricultural College in 1941. A member of a four-man team that designed and installed a new Army-wide financial management system, Vern personally visited each major Army command in the United States, Central America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. His military service was interrupted briefly while he studied at Harvard University for an MBA. Later, while serving in Washington, D.C., he earned a doctorate in economics at George Washington University and was an instructor of senior military officers at the Defense University’s Industrial College.

After 27 years of military service, Vern retired as an Army colonel in 1967. He returned to Logan to embark on his 21-year academic career as a management professor at Utah State University’s College of Business. While at USU, Vern founded and directed the student-run Business Partners Program. During this time, he also co-edited and published seven books and helped lay the foundation for the coveted Shingo Prize for excellence in manufacturing. After MaRee’s passing, Vern consulted briefly at Weber State University. He then joined the International Executive Service Corps and served as a professor in Poland and Ukraine for three years.

The Resource Management Inc. Classroom, Kurt and Dawn Larsen

Entrepreneur Kurt Larsen has a storied career with accomplishments that include time as president and CEO of Resource Management, Inc., a company he co-founded in 1992 in Salt Lake City. An expert in his field, Kurt understands the challenges that entrepreneurs deal with in running small businesses. He started RMI to help small business owners focus directly on the production side of their company through outsourcing their administrative, payroll, benefits, human resources and risk management functions. In his earlier days, Kurt received a bachelor’s in personnel and industrial relations from Utah State University in 1969 and a master’s in public administration from Ball State University. He then served for 10 years as an officer in the United States Army, was involved in the Vietnam conflict, fulfilled two tours of duty in Europe and was an assistant professor of military science at Brigham Young University. He owned a real estate development company, travel agency and small manufacturing company during his working career. He currently serves on the National Advisory Board at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business.

Brett and Julie Hugie both earned bachelor’s degrees from Utah State University in 1989 in the areas of accounting and finance respectively.

After graduating from USU, Brett has enjoyed an accomplished career that includes time with an international accounting firm in Los Angeles, as a partner of a CPA firm in Loga, a consultant with Cache Valley Electric, and as chief financial officer/director of operations of Cache Valley Electric Company.

Douglas D. Anderson Executive Boardroom

Douglas D. Anderson’s storied career includes time in both the public and private sectors. Accomplishments include time as the dean of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University, the Jon M. Huntsman Presidential Professor of Leadership, and visiting professor of business administration at Harvard Business School.

Doug’s academic career started at Harvard University, where he taught the introductory course in economics, while finishing his doctorate in political economy and government. He would later join the Harvard Business School faculty and start a consulting firm, the Center for Executive Development (CED), with three fellow former Harvard Business School professors. In 2006, Doug become dean of the Huntsman School of Business at his alma mater, Utah State. The next year he was instrumental in securing a $25 million gift from Jon M. Huntsman Sr. for the college that was renamed the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business.

A native of Utah, Doug has served as a member and vice chair of the USU Board of Trustees, board member of the USU Research Foundation and member of the Old Main Society. He has also represented the university on the board of the Utah Foundation for seven years. As a student at USU, he received the Robins Award, the university’s highest honor for “Achievement of the Year,” for his work as editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper.

L. Tom Perry Community Pavilion (1922-2015)

Elder L. Tom Perry was called to serve as member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1974, after having served as an assistant to the Twelve since 1972.

A Cache Valley native, L. Tom was born in 1922 in Logan to Leslie Thomas and Nora Sonne Perry. He received a bachelor’s in finance from Utah State University in 1949. His professional career was spent in the retail business, where he served as vice president and treasurer in companies located in Idaho, California, New York and Massachusetts.

L. Tom’s church service began with a mission to the Northern States in 1942, after which he served for two years with the Marines in the Pacific. Subsequent church positions include counselor in a bishopric in Lewiston, Idaho; counselor in a stake presidency in Sacramento, California; high councilor in the New York Stake; and president of the Boston Stake.

L. Tom married Virginia Lee of Hyde Park, Utah, in the Logan Temple. The couple had two daughters and a son. He later married Barbara Taylor Dayton in the Salt Lake Temple.

Raised in poverty in rural Idaho, Jon M. Huntsman, Sr., became one of the most respected businessmen in the world. The values he learned early on about integrity, initiative and hard work, helped to shape the pillars of the school, namely, ethical leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, analytical rigor and global vision.

The Huntsman Library invites visitors to explore Huntsman’s personal history and his powerful and positive influence in the world and to consider how anyone can apply some of his guiding principles to lead lives of meaning and contribution.

Jon once said “no exercise is better for the human heart than reaching down and lifting another up.”
