George Meyer International Room

George A. Meyer, professor emeritus of languages and philosophy, was at Utah State University for 33 years, during which time he was a professor, department head and foreign student advisor. A gentle, quiet scholar, Dr. Meyer was a friend and advisor to all students. He established the first classes in English as a Foreign Language at USU and wrote texts on the phonetic problems of English for foreign speakers. He had a particular perception of, and empathy with, foreign students to whom he extended understanding and friendship when they most needed it in a country new to them.

Frederick P. Champ (1896-1976) Hall

The area of administrative offices clustered around the president’s suite on the first floor of the west section of Old Main was designated Champ Hall on Founders Day, March 8, 1979.  The designation was made in honor of Frederick P. Champ, an ardent supporter of the Utah State University and former chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Frederick had attended the institution, then the Utah Agricultural College, in 1911, and served on the board from 1925 until 1941. During a time of unprecedented financial hardship, he used his political influence and financial acumen to arrange for the construction of many campus buildings, including the original library, the Home Economics cottage, the Family Life (Commons) building, the renovated Amphitheater and Lund Hall. Frederick was also singularly responsible for forming the committees that worked to construct the original Romney Stadium, as well as the George Nelson Field House.

By resolution of the Board of Trustees on March 3, 1995, the entire West Wing of Old Main was named for Frederick.
