Ray B. West (1882-1936)

Constructed during World War I, Utah State University’s original Engineering Building was named posthumously for Dean of School Ray B. West in 1986. The College of Education moved into what is now the Ray B. West Building in 1962, following completion of the new Engineering and Physical Sciences Building. Later, the building became home to the Department of English after completion of the Emma Eccles Jones Education Building in 1990. The English Department had previously been housed on the fourth floor of the Merrill Library on the Quad.

Ray Benedict West, Sr., was an engineer who served at what is now Utah State University as a teacher and administrator from 1912 to 1936. His papers and research are archived in the Merrill-Cazier Library, Special Collections and Archives Division. His son (1908-1990) was a USU English professor.
