The Quad - Sign donated by the 2016 Senior Class

The concept of the Quad was first suggested in the 1912 campus master plan, prepared by the architectural firm of Pray, Hubbard and White. Anchored by the splendor of Old Main on the west, the design included the locations for most of the buildings adorning the Quad today. The area of the Quad hosted the first in-state football rivalry between the Aggies and the University of Utah in 1892 (the Aggies won), served the needs of drilling cadets during WWI, and provided space for the tents of visiting families during the annual Farmers’ Encampment beginning in 1921. Since the Block A was erected near Old Main in 1917, thousands of students have lined the Quad’s path as they waited to become “True Aggies”.

Every summer, groups of freshman gather under its shady trees to learn the ropes of becoming an Aggie, and in the spring, graduating seniors line up for the walk across campus that signals their transition to becoming alumni. For more than 100 years, the Quad has served as both an outdoor classroom, as well as a space for students to study, relax, congregate and recreate. The Quad, simply put, is the heart of the Utah State University campus.
