Bott and Sons Monument Classroom
Room C224
In 1875, John H. Bott started his memorial business in a thatch-roofed hut in Brigham City. John’s business was a family affair as much as a community employer, where he employed many who came to the small community until they could build a home and start either their own business. The men would cut, shape and polish the raw materials acquired locally or shipped by rail from the East Coast.
Finding workers was never a problem as John had a large family. After his death, John left a legacy of memorial craftsmanship that would be passed through the family for the next five generations and flourish throughout the west.
The old Mill and the family trade have passed on to fifth and sixth generation craftsmen, determined to carry on the tradition and excellence of their forefathers. While not as labor intense as the “mallet and chisel days” of the past, the craftsmanship remains the same.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Lowell sold his home, took his famil, and helped his Japanese-American friends in their desperate move to Southern Utah. His friends raced to beat a March 1942 deadline to leave the restricted area or face arrest and detainment. He led the convoy of more than 10 families from Los Angeles to Page’s Ranch, an isolated tract of land, 30 miles west of Cedar City.
The families stayed on at Page’s Ranch for a year or two before moving on to Idaho and Colorado to farm. Lowell stayed in Utah. In the 1950s he bought a mill in Parowan to crack grain for a feed company in Southern California. He eventually moved his company to the small town of Honeyville, Utah, taking the name for his company, Honeyville Grain. In 1973, Lowell continued to expand, bringing his company back to Southern California. The California facility moved around the greater Los Angeles area before settling in Rancho Cucamonga, California in 1988. In the fall of 198, a warehouse and distribution facility was added in North Salt Lake City, Utah. That facility grew and now resides in Ogden Utah.

Milton P. Miller Building (1908-1997)

Milton P. Miller was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 1933. He served in the United States Air force (1933-1935) as an aircraft instructor. While stationed in Miami Beach, Florida, Milton developed a love for the game of golf. This, and a passion for health and fitness, stayed with him through his life. Following his military service, he returned to Brooklyn and began a 62-year career as a real-estate attorney. Milton met his sweetheart, Selma, in 1949, when he hired her as his secretary.
The son of a Russian immigrant, Milton had an innate desire to own land because in his family’s native country, land ownership determined success. In 1947, Milton borrowed $3,000 from a relative and made his first real-estate purchase – a large area of undeveloped land in Brooklyn that sold 20 years later for over $6 million. Over the course of the next 50 years, Milton bought and sold real-estate through the United States. One of his most common investments was “big boxes” – including the Brigham City K-Mart building, which he purchased in the mid-1980s. Milton was an avid proponent of the value of higher education. Following his passing, his wife Selma donated the K-Mart building in 2003 for the purpose of benefitting students of Utah State University Brigham City Regional Campus. In honor of her husband’s legacy, it was Selma’s wish that a building on the Utah State University Brigham City campus be named the Milton P. Miller Building.
