Where Gratitude Meets Purpose: Janet Osborne’s Lifelong Commitment to Education and Empowerment

For more than four decades, Janet Osborne ’89 Ed.D. has been a champion for education, opportunity, and community at Utah State University. As an emeritus faculty member in sociology and the former director of USU’s Women’s Center, Janet helped countless students — particularly women returning to school — find their voice, their confidence, and their place in higher education. Now, through her continued philanthropy, she ensures that same spirit of support endures for generations to come.

Most recently, Janet and her daughter Lisa funded the Osborne Family Lactation Suite in the Mehdi Heravi Global Teaching and Learning Center, a warm and welcoming space for nursing mothers across campus.

“It really started with my daughter,” Janet shared. “She thought this would be a wonderful addition for families on campus. As it turned out, the space was available in the new building and everything just fell into place. We were happy to help make it happen.”

For Janet, supporting education, and the people who make it thrive, has always been personal. Her late husband, Grayson Osborne, was a professor of psychology at USU, and both of their daughters grew up deeply connected to the university community. After the tragic loss of their daughter Stephanie, Janet worked with Grayson and Lisa to establish the Stephanie Osborne Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship, housed in USU’s Institute of Government and Politics, ensures that Stephanie’s spirit continues to inspire and empower students.

“Stephanie was planning to study abroad, and when she passed away, we wanted to honor her memory in a way that would help others,” Janet said. “Scholarships show students that someone believes in them — that someone outside their family sees potential and wants to invest in them. That confidence can make all the difference.”

Through her giving, Janet has seen firsthand how endowments strengthen the university and create lasting change.

“It depends on how well the university manages and structures things, and Utah State does that very well,” Janet said. “Endowments mean that the value of your gift continues to grow. It keeps helping students long after you’re gone.”

As someone who devoted her career to supporting nontraditional students, Janet understands the difference financial relief can make.

“If students aren’t working two to three jobs, they can focus on their studies,” Janet explained. “It relieves stress and allows them to really learn. That’s why scholarships are so important. They give students the space to succeed.”

Janet’s commitment to education extends beyond USU’s campuses.

“Any time we support education we strengthen society,” Janet reflected. “Our communities are fragile, so the more educated people we have, the stronger our communities become. It’s all connected.”

Through initiatives like the Osborne Family Lactation Suite and her endowed scholarship, Janet continues to embody USU’s mission of access and excellence. Her giving reflects not only gratitude for her time at Utah State but also a vision for its future.

“I’ve been very fortunate,” Janet said. “It’s not always about the dollar amount — it’s about the intent. There’s no better way to spend your money than on education. Educated people make a difference. They don’t all have to agree, but they help strengthen and improve society.”

For Janet, the true reward of giving lies in knowing she’s helping people succeed and inspiring others to do the same.

“My whole point is that giving should be accessible to everyone,” Janet said. “It’s about setting an example. When people see that others care, they’re inspired to give too. And that’s how a community grows stronger.”
