Laurel

Hi Aggies!

Thank you for letting me take a moment to connect with you and send my very best wishes. It is an honor to be serving our worldwide Aggie Family.

I did not get to say it in person, so I want to say it now: congratulations to the Class of 2020! Happily, the Class of 2020 included my son. Our family celebrated by taking a few photos on the quad and reflecting on how much we all gained from our connections with Utah State. I am so proud of all the graduates who were able to stay focused and finish with their degrees. It was hard, and it was worth it.

These are difficult times. There is tremendous uncertainty and suffering, and many are dealing with hardship, loss, displacement, stress and financial burden, as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and confront racial injustice on a worldwide scale.

Please know that as Aggie alums, we care about you, our close-knit family of alumni and friends throughout the world. In good times, and in tough times, the beauty of being an Aggie is that we are here for one another.

It is vitally important that Aggies from all parts of the world and all walks of life find meaning, purpose, and connections. I am committed to prioritizing diversity, inclusion and equity among alumni at Utah State. We are better together, and we can do more and be more as one. The university has started a campus-wide initiative to foster a caring community where we are all challenged to “think, care, and act.” I accept that challenge and ask you to join.

2020 marks a time of learning what it means to respect each other. We are learning to listen and understand.

I am inspired by Maya Angelou who said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

Recently, when I was feeling particularly discouraged, a friend shared that when she gets overwhelmed, she sets out to do “one good thing.” Simple, but smart. Do one good thing. I see our Aggie Family in this way. Do good where you can. I love that Aggies serve each other.

I hope that you will reach out to our Aggie Alumni team and let us know how we can help you and support your work and your efforts. We want to hear from you. And, if you don’t already, follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram @UtahStateAlumni.

Always remember that you have Aggies who care about you and who are cheering you on.

Go Aggies!
