Al Smith

Al Smith, a proud 1987 graduate of Utah State University, has built an extraordinary career marked by excellence, leadership, and service. A native of Los Angeles, Al came to USU to play football, where he quickly made his mark as a team captain, two-time All-Pacific Coast Conference selection, and 1986 Defensive Player of the Year. He remains one of the greatest defensive players in Aggie history, holding multiple records and a place in the USU Athletic Hall of Fame and the State of Utah’s All-Century Team.

Drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1987, Al went on to play 11 seasons in the National Football League, earning multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors as a linebacker and team captain. Following his playing career, he transitioned seamlessly into executive leadership, serving with the Tennessee Titans as Director of Player Development and Pro Scouting. Today, he continues to shape the game as a compliance officer for the NFL and as vice chair of the National Board of Directors for the NFL Alumni Association.

Beyond the field, Al is a dedicated community leader, author, and sought-after speaker, working with organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Cancer Society, and the Ronald McDonald House. His book, Think Like a Pro – Act Like a Pro, shares lessons of discipline, character, and success with audiences nationwide.

Al and his wife, Katrina, make their home in Nashville, Tennessee, where they have raised three children: Courtney, Coryn, and Christian. His remarkable journey from Aggie linebacker to national leader stands as a testament to the values of perseverance, service, and excellence that define Utah State University.
