Biography

Bolton Colburn has extensive curatorial and museum leadership experience. Colburn specializes in American art in the western United States, particularly in California art. Most recently he served as editor and guest curator for NEHMA’s Collecting on the Edge exhibition and catalogue. Other projects in recent years include supervising the development of the facility and permanent exhibition for Heroes Hall, a new museum in Orange County California focused on the stories of our veterans. He has held posts as Executive Director of the Surfing Heritage Foundation, Director of the Laguna Art Museum, Senior Curator of the Laguna Art Museum and Senior Curator of the Orange County Museum of Art. His publications and exhibitions include San Francisco the Golden Age 1930-1960; Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California; Kustom Kulture: Von Dutch; Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Robert Williams and Others; Across the Street: Self-Help Graphics and Chicano Art in Los Angeles; Surf Culture: The Art History of Surfing; In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor; and In Nature’s Temple: The Art and Life of William Wendt.
