Untitled Bas Relief
Robert Fletcher
American
Untitled Bas Relief, 1966
Brick, 7’ x 40’
Gift of the Artist, NEHMA
On the south-facing wall of the Chase Fine Arts Center is an intriguing bas relief sculpture, a sculpture in which the subject is raised a few inches from a flat background to produce a three-dimensional effect. Ceramic artist Robert Fletcher made this piece by carving the raw brick of the then newly constructed Chase Fine Arts Center, and it depicts a group of actors during a performance. It marks the home of USU Department of Theatre Arts. Fletcher comes from a family of artists. Two of his siblings are painters and his father, Calvin Fletcher, was Department Head of the USU Art Department from 1903 to 1949.
