Light Fixtures, 1973–76

Iron wire, 60" dia

Gift of the Artist

Larry Elsner originally made these three identical spheres to serve as light fixtures for the lobby of the Merrill Library, which is now the location of the Agricultural Sciences building. USU removed the electrical hardware inside the spheres and installed the pieces as sculptures in the lobby of the Merrill-Cazier Library in 2005. To make the spheres, Elsner welded iron wire into triangles and then welded the triangles together. Each one is five feet in diameter and weighs approximately 60 pounds. Their organic design provides a light and airy presence while maintaining a sense of unity with the building’s industrial materials.
