Spiraling women sleep,
stacked spines for holding.
Oval echoes no edge—
so I smell basil
hung from kitchen window
hear my grandmother’s gold bands clink
as she reaches in the cupboard
pulls out a beaker
for milk and
lines of women
cupping their palms.
Bring bodies to lips
taste blossoms of red
glaze over tongue
speak muted
ancient
ripples
in clay cracked on hands.
She made women for bowls—
they made bowls from women.
Spirals of take
bent circles in our skin.
